Primary Job Function:

The Reynoldsburg City Schools’ Head Custodian II is responsible for the planning and maintenance of buildings, grounds and physical plant, and supporting a learning environment that promotes health, attitude, and pride of students. He/she provides a variety of custodial services, special cleaning operations and maintenance generally at the Middle level, ensuring an attractive, sanitary, and safe environment for all students, staff, and visitors. The Head Custodian II has supervisory responsibility over other assigned custodians and helps the assignment and completion of assigned work. The Head Custodian II may be assigned to a building other than at the Middle Level (i.e. Elementary or High School) at the discretion of the Director of Operations/Business Manager and approved by the Superintendent.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or its equivalent
  • Two (2) years institutional or commercial custodial experience preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Primary functions may include the following duties, responsibilities, skills, abilities, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions within this classification.

 

Cleaning Functions

  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and refinish floors; clean, dust and polish furniture; wash windows and walls; clean restrooms; dispose of rubbish, change lights, etc
  • Responsible for seeing all areas of the building are kept in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition according to district standards
  • Pick up litter within the schools and on school grounds
  • Assure safety during inclement weather to include shoveling, providing slip protection on wet floors, securing against wind damage, snow removal from roofs, etc
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor such as moving desks, chairs, file cabinets and cafeteria tables on a regular basis.
  • Have the ability to climb and work from ladders
  • Use cleaning procedures and chemicals according to manufacturer’s recommendations and established industry standards
  • Adhere to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment
  • Perform minor repair and maintenance as assigned
  • Advise Facilities Manager on matters relating to mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance

 

Administrative Functions

  • Recognize the need for and initiate maintenance service requests according to district procedures. Follow through to assure that maintenance is performed in a timely manner.
  • Manage the building and maintain inventory; request cleaning supplies and materials needed to accomplish assigned tasks
  • Maintain awareness of energy conservation and initiate or make suggestions of methods and procedures to consider energy
  • Secure equipment and supplies and protect against pilferage, loss, theft, or abuse
  • Act as a contact for outside vendors and contractors to minimize disruption to the educational environment
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain records, write simple reports and possess general computer knowledge and skills.

 

Safety and Security

  • Conduct daily inspection and otherwise maintain awareness of facility and equipment to detect and prevent injuries or damage
  • Secure school building to ensure proper building security at all times. Lock, secure, and code out building at end of shift
  • Verify that emergency equipment is maintained and repaired as needed
  • Assist in implementing emergency planning and response, health and other related building inspections

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in custodial work
  • Knowledge of floor and carpet maintenance
  • Knowledge of various cleaning solutions
  • Knowledge of workplace safety
  • Skilled at effective verbal and written communication
  • Skilled in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Skilled in collaboration and decision-making, seeking consensus whenever possible
  • Skilled in conflict resolution
  • Ability to “think outside the box”
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
  • Ability to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Ability to promote positive staff morale
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and conflicting time constraints.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands – While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with others. The employee is required to sit or stand and move around for extended periods of time. While performing the duties of this job the employee must be able to push, pull, lift and carry over 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Working Conditions – The employee in this position may experience occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue. The employee may also be required to interact with unruly children.
  • Driving Requirement – This position may require driving.
