Position to begin 2025-2026 School Year

POSITION TITLE: Science Teacher, Jr. High School Grades 6-8

CLASSIFICATION: Certificated Position; FSLA Exempt

REPRESENTATION: Union representation available by the Wahluke Education Association (WEA)

REPORTS TO: Principal and/or Vice Principal

Salary: Wahluke Certificated Salary Schedule with additional Professional Learning Activity stipend of 5.5% of base salary, and 5 days of professional development and 3 days of additional staff to student learning engagement days.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Wahluke School district is in need of a science teacher qualified to teach a variety of courses that preferably relate to physical, earth, and life science. May be assigned to teach math as needed. Interest and ability to secure a CTE certificate in related areas may be considered. Specific assignment to be determined by need, qualifications and experience. Participate in and contribute to the whole school environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate in Science, Middle-Level science or a K-8 endorsed certificate with experience/training content knowledge in science. Knowledge of and ability to teach math courses helpful.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Depending upon individual assignment, the teacher performs all or a combination of several of the following duties. This list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary.

  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher’s expectations, developing methods for improvement, and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Ability to analyze student data assesses students for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding students’ progress, expectations, goals, etc.
  • Assists other teachers for the purpose of implementing the curriculum.
  • Collaborates with school personnel, parents, and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions, and planning curriculum.
  • Demonstrates methods required to perform assignments and/or skills (e.g. lab experiments, etc.) for the purpose of providing the students with the necessary skills to perform the tasks safely and/or accurately.
  • Provides for individual differences in the learning needs of students, provides a classroom climate that is based upon mutual respect, rapport, fairness, and consistency ensuring that every child has an equitable opportunity for success.
  • Directs instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of study.
  • Monitors student activities for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Prepares teaching materials and reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress.
  • Maintain a safe and positive learning environment and adhering to education code, district, and/or school policies.
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Participates in various meetings (e.g. parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information and/or meeting credential requirements.
  • May serve as club supervisor and provide professional, appropriate guidance to student leadership club/activities.
  • Attend/supervise field trips, which may include overnight.
  • Participate in curriculum review and design.
  • Implement a variety of effective instructional strategies consistent with lesson objectives.
  • Diagnose and evaluate student abilities and progress in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
  • Provide progress reports as required.
  • Refer students for alternative services as provided by the District (ELL, Reading, Special Education).
  • Effectively implement district initiatives.
  • Willingness and ability to attend trainings, including travel. Maybe outside the school year calendar, may include overnight.
  • Effectively collaborate with department and grade level teachers.
  • Proficient in the use of technology to enhance student learning.
  • Abide by state statutes, school board policies, and regulations.
  • Attend meetings and performs duties as assigned by administrators or supervisors.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Serve on committees as assigned.
  • Maintain professional student boundaries.
  • Remain current on instructional practices in education. (e.g. instructional technology)

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, and evaluate student performance.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum standards, education code, appropriate instructional subjects.
  • Ability to instruct students and manage behavior.
  • Maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of insurability, and meet requirements to transport students preferred.
  • Able to work in a calm, efficient safe manner.
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs, and up to 50 lbs occasionally with assistance.
  • Able and expected to attend work as scheduled.
  • Able to model appropriate professional behavior.
  • Ability to solve practical problems, apply appropriate judgment, and deal with a variety of situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of student and district records required.
  • Successful experience implementing G.L.A.D. / SIOP/ CM instructional strategies preferred; training helpful.
  • Understanding of Whole Brain Teaching strategies and successful incorporation into instructional delivery preferred.
  • Understanding/Knowledge of 5D CEL Instructional Frameworks and ability to incorporate dimensions in daily teaching practices.
  • Ability and willingness to attend and supervisor student field trips.
  • Willingness to provide supervision to student clubs, etc.
  • Knowledge of/training in Safe & Civil Schools, PBIS, AVID, and Character Strong preferred.
  • Technology proficient or ability to gain proficiency to integrate technology into the instructional delivery and for communication and reporting purposes.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, other school personnel, meet schedules and deadlines. Significant physical abilities include lifting, carrying, reaching, handling, talking, hearing, near/far visual acuity, depth perception, the field of vision.
