Preferred Substitute Teacher
We are seeking a dedicated and adaptable Substitute Teacher to join our team. This role is essential in providing continuity of education for students when regular teachers are on leave. The ideal candidate will have a passion for teaching and the ability to effectively manage a dynamic classroom environment.

1. Substitute Teacher Certification
A substitute teacher certification is not required for those who have completed a State-Approved Teacher Education (SATE) program.
Those with a Bachelor's degree or higher (no teacher training) will need to complete a Substitute Teacher Certification program with a passing score of 80% or higher.
All substitute teacher certifications are valid for five (5) years and may be obtained using one of the following programs:
The Department's Community School for Adults (CSA)
STEDI Subskills
The Master Teacher: Substitute Teacher Online Training
University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), College of Education (COE)
Applicants with less than a Bachelor's degree may be hired with a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent and must have completed a Substitute Teacher Certification program.
2. Transcripts
Official transcripts are required to be submitted with the application.
3. Tuberculosis (TB) Test Clearance
A TB test clearance certificate with valid date no later than one (1) year from the date of the application is required.
Preferred Competencies:
Effective July 1, 2024, Substitute Teachers are paid a daily rate based upon the class to which they belong (see below).
Class III
Substitute teachers who meet any one or all of the following:
A Hawaii-licensed teacher;
A teacher (including current/retired DOE teachers) who completed a
State-Approved Teacher Education (SATE) program.
$194.01/day
Class II
Substitute teachers who possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university or equivalent (see above).
$179.50/day
Class I
Substitute teachers who do not possess a Bachelor's degree but meet specific employment requirements set by the Department of Education.
$164.97/day

Responsibilities
- Deliver lesson plans and instructional materials left by the regular teacher.
- Maintain a positive and productive classroom atmosphere conducive to learning.
- Manage classroom behavior and ensure a safe and respectful environment.
- Adapt teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and administration.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance.
- Follow school policies and procedures at all times.
