Education/Experience/Certifications to Qualify:
- Bachelor's Degree required and five years' experience in a Clinical Lab
- Supervisory experience preferred
- Medical Technologist (ASCP) or equivalent certification required
Essential Functions:
- Adheres to general hospital standards, policies, and procedures to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships, team building and contributing to the overall quality of services.
- Assures the day-to-day technical operation of the laboratory. Develops technical procedures and policies; maintains current and complete procedure manuals; monitors results to assure procedures are performed correctly; and maintains required supply and equipment inventories for the remarkable operation of the lab section.
- Involves the Medical Director(s) in the daily operation, technical operation and decision making for the lab. Promotes and maintains professional and cooperative working relationships with other Medical Center Departments. Supports Hospital/Medical Centers mission and exhibits hospital key values.
- Assures effective staffing and management of laboratory personnel in compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
- Ensures the education/training of lab personnel concerning collecting, identifying, handling, transporting, testing and disposal of patient specimens. Assures maximum care in safety and identification procedures involving patients, samples and laboratory working conditions. Monitors compliance with all safety-related policies and procedures to ensure laboratory staff protection.
- Effectively communicates to section Medical Director(s), lab administration and staff about hospital policies and procedures as well as information of daily interest. Communicates with customers to resolve problems and follow-thru to ensure satisfaction.
- Participates in the operational/technical planning for the lab section and overall lab services. Makes recommendations to Lab Administration and Medical Director (s) related to service enhancements, developments and expansion. Prepares, implements and monitors budgets and other financial activities as directed by Lab Administration and Financial Management.
- Provides timely response to management directives, according to department practices. Maintains quality by developing and monitoring quality assurance parameters. Coordinates accreditation and inspection activities for the laboratory section.
- Ensures required training is provided to all levels of lab personnel, students and residents. Offers and encourages continuing education, in-service education programs and evaluates external training programs. Participates in in-service and continuing education programs (minimum of 10 hours per year outside of annual required in-services) and in technical/management/education opportunities. Maintains current certification.
- Exhibits leadership and the professional image of laboratories in interactions with all individuals and operational activities. Demonstrates commitment to the hospital and laboratory department's philosophy, goals, management practices and general operations.
