JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, the RLTIV will perform duties specific to the Flow Cytometry Core Laboratory. Plan, develop, modify, and implement previously developed and original experimental procedures in a research laboratory exercising independent judgment based upon specialized theoretical knowledge of the applicable science. Operate the complex instrumentation of the Flow Cytometry core.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in the Biological and/or Physical Sciences with four years of related chemical/research experience. Master's degree in Biology or related Physical Science with two years of laboratory experience preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Confer with the Core Laboratory Director and/or Manager in the planning, development, and implementation of research projects; develop control procedures for test standardization. Maintain the instrumentation up to specifications, running all standards and analyses necessary to assure the highest possible quality of data. Make independent decisions regarding problem solving of daily technical issues that may routinely arise during analysis.
- Set up and perform cell sorting experiments.
- Develop experimental techniques for specimen and tissue analyses utilized in complex laboratory procedures.
- Review scientific journals, abstracts, and other research literature to obtain or verify additional information used in the design and development of laboratory procedures and techniques related to the research projects.
- Prepare detailed reports on the results of experiments; discuss with principal investigator the interpretation of the results and collaborate in the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication.
- Maintain facilities and equipment supplies; develop and establish laboratory work procedures, methods, and policies; schedule and determine work priorities. Interact and collaborate with Principal Investigators and other technical support personnel in other laboratories.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in flow cytometry required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
- Ability to operate laboratory equipment
- Knowledge of the maintenance of routine records and reports
