Job Description Summary 88.5 WFDD, North Carolina’s charter NPR station, seeks a Development Director. The Development Director oversees all revenue-related efforts at WFDD, to include private gifts, major gifts, corporate sponsorships (underwriting), and grants. A member of senior leadership, the Development Director is responsible for ensuring that fundraising goals are met, and for strategizing ways to increase revenue to contribute to the continued growth of WFDD. The Development Director is expected to be an enthusiastic leader, and to build strong relationships with the regional philanthropic community. WFDD is the dominant source of news on the radio in our markets; the Development Director plays a significant role in ensuring that WFDD can provide the continued public service our communities rely on. The Development Director also collaborates with the Content Director and Marketing Manager and reports to Senior Management. Job Description Essential Functions: Provides hands-on leadership of the development departments, including Listener & Donor Services, Major Gifts, Corporate Underwriting, and Grants to achieve annual and multi-year revenue goals. Partners with the Listener & Donor Services manager to increase new member participation, increase donor retention, ensure sustained giving program targets are reached, and increase overall gift revenue. Recruits, manages, and evaluates a team focused on maximizing productivity, creativity, and achieving revenue goals. Develops and implements innovative new strategies for revenue generation, including digital initiatives, events, and listener experiences in cooperation with other station leaders. Leads the major gifts program including prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship as well as goal setting and record-keeping in coordination with Listener & Donor Services and Wake Forest University staff. Identifies and implements opportunities for specialized fundraising campaigns and projects to fund new or existing initiatives such as a general endowment and capital campaigns for expanding services. Supervises and works with the Director of Corporate Support to increase underwriting from new and existing clients, develop new cross-platform and platform-specific underwriting opportunities, and—working with the senior leadership—to engage in corporate partnerships and identify new revenue streams. Participates in the strategic planning process, identifying new fundraising and marketing opportunities, and leads implementation by the development team. Partners with the Content Director and Marketing Manager in the creation and execution of special events and projects to maximize visibility and revenue. As a member of senior station leadership, the Development Director is a mentor and example to all staff and works closely with senior station leadership to set station policy and culture. Works closely with senior station leadership and Wake Forest University Finance Department to develop the annual WFDD budget as well as develop and manage the overall fundraising goals for the station. Interacts with public radio fundraising thought leaders and organizations to present and develop innovative new fundraising models for public media. Develops and participates in innovative fundraising programs and research that is shared at national conferences. Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: A bachelor's degree is required for this position, with at least five to seven years of relevant development experience in an existing non-profit organization with proven longevity and an annual operating budget of at least three million dollars or more. Track record of success in growth of organizational revenue. Demonstrated commitment to inclusive leadership. Excellent communication and people skills, including writing, proof reading, speaking, and presenting to large groups. Demonstrated ability to work in presentation software such as PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides, or Prezi. Demonstrated ability to implement online promotions using online tools and social media advertising campaigns. Understanding of and commitment to local community engagement. Demonstrated success in cross-departmental collaboration, leadership, and execution of organization-wide initiatives. Mission-driven with a strong orientation toward customer service and listener/donor engagement. Careful attention to detail with exceptional and consistent follow-through. Dynamic innovator with strong decision-making and risk assessment skills Solution-oriented, positive mindset with strong leadership and project management skills Valid Driver’s License Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Familiarity with audience research (Nielsen and Google Analytics). Experience with public radio formats, news, and an understanding of the medium of both audio storytelling/interview techniques and music programming a plus. Familiarity with the philanthropic community in the Piedmont and High Country of North Carolina is a plus.
