JOB SUMMARY:
Assists in monitoring cost containment in labor, supplies and equipment to promote optimal quality patient care at minimum cost. Performs technical duties in the cleaning, care and processing of instrument trays, patient care equipment and other reusable items. Participates in the orientation of new employees.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED required and 3 year of Experience as a Sterile Processing Technician or Surgical Technologist in a Sterile Supply or Operating Room.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:
Certification in sterile processing/central sterile from CBSPD or IAHCSMM required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assists with staffing, planning and control of the operational functions in conjunction with the requirements of all areas;
- Assists and instructs in the supervision of specialized technical skills requirements and work performance in the department;
- Assumes responsibility for the department in the absence of management personnel;
- Works with department manager in developing quality monitors, inservice programs and orientation programs;
- Assists in investigation of problem areas of complaints concerning intra and inter departmental operation
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors
- Sterilizes instruments, equipment, linen and supplies using various types of autoclaves.
- Loads autoclaves in the prescribed manner and set controls to specified time and temperature according to material and requirements of items being sterilized.
- Completes appropriate documentation records prior to sterilization.
- Reads and initials autoclave graph to verify that all requirements have been met.
- Assembles all instrument procedure trays and supply carts following prescribed manner using protocol content lists as a guide.
- Marks items with identifying data and distributes or stores in designated area
- Dispenses products requested by verbal, written or telephone requisitions for equipment and supplies.
- Identifies and assigns priority to emergency requests and issues required supplies and equipment based on knowledge of procedure intended
- Disassembles and cleans equipment, procedure trays and instruments using detergent following established procedure.
- Reassembles equipment and operates to test for proper functioning. Replaces lost or damaged instruments as required to complete procedure trays.
- Reports any lost or damaged instruments to the coordinator.
- Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition to maintain required standards for handling sterilized and clean materials and equipment
- Performs other related duties as required such as examining sterilization/expiration dates; reporting inoperable equipment;
- Making visual inventory inspections to maintain adequate stock and supply levels;
- Tests effectiveness of autoclave function by assembling and placing culture spore tests following procedure;
- Stores new and reprocessed equipment and supplies;
- Cleans shelves and work areas and mops liquid spills from floors as necessary
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Basic computer skills and aptitude required.
- Extensive knowledge of instrumentation.
- Ability to act as a resource for staff in both SPD and OR regarding identification and assembly of specialty instruments and trays.
- Ability to work daily in a fast-paced Healthcare Services environment.
- Ability to perform tasks simultaneously while maintaining quality.
- May be required to work various shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime hours.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Frequently exposed to bio-hazardous material, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
