Purpose of the Job
The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for construction projects based on client specifications and project documentation. This role primarily focuses on civil municipal and public works projects and will work under the direct supervision of the Vice President.
General Duties/Key Responsibilities
· Review construction documents (plans, specifications, etc.) to fully understand the scope of work for bidding.
· Research and identify potential new project opportunities.
· Understand and apply various contract types and delivery methods, including Unit Price, Lump Sum, Design-Build, etc.
· Review bid documents to ensure compliance with requirements for submitting a responsive bid/proposal.
· Perform take-offs from construction drawings and documents.
· Input and organize take-off data into spreadsheets and/or estimating software.
· Source pricing for materials and obtain bids from subcontractors.
· Conduct MWSBE outreach and secure bids from diverse subcontractors.
· Perform preliminary site investigations for potential projects and report relevant field information to the Supervisor.
· Collaborate with the Operations department to develop initial work plans, project durations, and crew structures.
· Create basic preliminary schedules for estimating purposes.
· Review and compare quotes from subcontractors and suppliers, recommending the best option based on all factors.
· Prepare cost analyses by summarizing projected material, labor, equipment, subcontractor, and overhead costs per item.
· Price individual work items for clients, understanding the relationship between cost and revenue.
· Generate and submit bids/proposals following client specifications and deadlines.
· Maintain and update resource information on products, vendors, subcontractors, and government regulations.
· Attend departmental meetings as required.
· Attend customer meetings as needed to discuss potential projects.
· Set up and organize job folders, generate documents, and manage scanning and copying tasks.
Requirements
· Demonstrate strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with team members.
· Exhibit a high level of attention to detail and thoroughness in the completion of all tasks.
· Troubleshoot issues, think critically, and adapt to changing circumstances as needed.
· Manage time efficiently, prioritize tasks, and handle time-sensitive situations effectively.
· A college degree is preferred, with a preference for degrees in Engineering or Construction Management.
Desired Skills
· Strong mathematical skills with a foundational understanding of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
· Solid knowledge of science and physics, including an understanding of forces, material properties, units of measurement, and conversions.
· Advanced planning and scheduling abilities, with a basic understanding of critical paths, predecessor/successor relationships, Gantt charts, and cost/resource loading.
· Proficient in computer skills, with a basic understanding of Microsoft Operating Systems and Office products, especially Excel and Word, which are regularly utilized by the Estimator.
· Experience with industry-standard software such as Bluebeam and InEight is a plus. As well as DOT, civil, utilities, water, wastewater, stormwater experience.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position does not include any supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
This position is primarily based in an environmentally controlled office setting, with occasional visits to potential job sites as required.
Physical Demands
In performing the responsibilities of this role, the employee must be able to communicate effectively in person, via computer, and over the phone. The position requires visual acuity to read text and numbers, as well as the dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment. The employee may occasionally be required to lift or move items weighing up to 15 pounds.
Expected Hours of Work
The standard work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
