Department Overview
Our Accounting department keeps the official books and records of the company, publishes financial statements and compliance documents, and provides analyses and tools to company leaders to make the best business decisions. The department is made up of several groups who work together to complete all accounting functions including Loan Accounting, Accounts Payable, Payroll, Financial Reporting, Corporate Taxes, Special Initiatives, and Financial Reporting & Analysis.
The Impact You Will Have
The Payroll Specialist will be responsible for processing payroll and ensuring efficient delivery of accurate payroll data. The individual will engage in all aspects of the payroll process using the Workday system and will work with other staff to carry out these responsibilities. The Payroll Specialist will assist with the entire payroll process, timely recording of payroll accounting entries, and addressing employees’ questions related to payroll.

The Payroll Specialist will assist with the entire payroll process, timely recording of payroll accounting entries, and addressing employees’ questions related to payroll.
Primary Responsibilities
- Monitor Payroll processing in compliance with applicable rules and regulations
- Develop a strong relationship and collaborate with the HR department to ensure seamless communication between the two teams
- Prepare and/or review payroll previews and ensure accurate payroll data
- Assist with the audit and reconciliation process of personnel and payroll documents, as well as state and local tax requirements
- Assist with payroll reports as needed (e.g., W-2s, Worker’s Comp, benefit plan, and 401(k))
- Monitor and update Payroll information and resources on the company’s intranet and Workday
- Assist with the Time & Attendance process and send communications as appropriate
- Assist with all Payroll related journal entries including stock options, 401K, taxes, benefits
- Assist with payroll related account reconciliation preparation including benefit accounts
- Assist with payroll reconciliations to ensure compliance for HSA, 401K, and any other compensation items
- Monitor company’s payroll mailbox and address payroll related questions for employees
- Train employees on key payroll processes as needed and perform other duties as assigned
- Attendance is generally 8:30 am – 5:30 pm EST Monday through Friday with the ability to work up to 2 of those days remotely
- Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred
- 1 plus year(s) of payroll processing experience with payroll tax knowledge preferred
- Experience with Workday strongly preferred
- Experience in a mid-sized financial services/real estate company preferred
- CPP designation preferred
- Ability to manage information that is highly sensitive and confidential
- Basic understanding of Payroll Tax Laws and Regulations
- Understanding of key financial reports, including income statements, cash flow statements and balance sheets
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and attention to detail
- Advance knowledge of MS Excel
- Strong analytical skills
- Demonstrates team player mentality, interacting well within a team environment
- Ability to multi-task and work under pressure
- Takes initiative and identifies new ways to approach existing processes, maintains an ownership approach to problem-solving, and regularly goes above and beyond role
