PURPOSE STATEMENT
The High School Band Director is responsible for providing high-quality music instruction, fostering student growth, and maintaining a thriving band program. This includes leading instrumental ensembles, coordinating performances, and collaborating with students, staff, and the community to promote excellence in music education.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Build a strong foundation of positive relationships, high expectations, equitable systems, and SEL-informed (Social-Emotional Learning) practices that guide daily interactions and instructional decisions.
- Actively support a collaborative professional learning community (PLC) by analyzing student data, sharing successes and challenges, and implementing innovative instructional strategies to enhance student learning.
- Develop, implement, and assess effective, standards-based instruction aligned with the district’s adopted music curriculum.
- Provide inclusive, equity-centered instruction that engages all students through a variety of teaching methods and differentiated learning strategies.
- Design and administer common formative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Support and implement school-wide behavior expectations to ensure an orderly, safe, and productive learning environment.
- Communicate regularly and professionally with parents/guardians regarding student progress, performance opportunities, and classroom expectations to foster meaningful home-school collaboration.
- Plan, rehearse, and lead performances throughout the school year, ensuring a high level of musical excellence. Performances include but are not limited to: marching and Pep Band events (all Wa-Hi home football and basketball (boys and girls) games) including playoff games; collaborating with colleagues on Veterans Day Assembly; supporting students participating in music competitions; marching in Annual Veterans Day Parade; and preparing for and conducting Concert and Festival Performances, Jazz Performances and Wa-Hi Graduation.
- Proactively recruit and retain students by fostering strong communications with middle school band programs.
- Maintain and manage the Wa-Hi Band Music Library to ensure an organized and diverse repertoire.
- Oversee and manage the band instrument inventory.
- Actively collaborate with school administrators, department chairs, district music staff, parents, and community partners to support and enhance the music program.
- Participate in departmental meetings, professional development, and school activities to contribute to the broader educational community.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Building Administrator and the District Music Coordinator as appropriate.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement.
- Prior teaching experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
- Knowledge/awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior, and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others.
- Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons of the district.
- Advocate for equity, inclusion and professional practices that ensure all students achieve at high levels.
- Knowledge of SEL practices and approaches.
- Knowledge and skill in instructional principles, methods and techniques.
- Commitment and ability to work with a full range of students.
- Skill in student management, student discipline and developing positive techniques for improving student behavior.
- Must possess a positive attitude about change and an eagerness to implement changes that will enhance student learning.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with a variety of students, staff, and community in a multicultural and diverse socio-economic setting.
- Ability to participate collaboratively in teams.
- Ability to continue participation in staff development to maintain professional skills.

- Ability to follow appropriate guidelines and protocols to ensure a safe and engaging learning environment.
Licenses/Special Requirements
- Must maintain all licenses and certifications as a condition of continued employment.
- Completed Employment Application/ Background Check.
- Must complete Walla Walla Public Schools Risk Management and Bloodborne Pathogens Training upon hire.
