WALLINGFORD FAMILY YMCA JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Camp Counselor Status: Part-Time
Reports to: Director of Youth Development Department: Camp

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Camp Director, this person is responsible for organizing, leading and supervising an assigned group of summer camp children. This position is seasonal, running from June 1st through August 31st depending on the camp schedule.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Be at camp 10 minutes prior to the start of any camp program.

Plan, lead and supervise activities with the assigned group of campers.

Participate with children in activities.

Be responsible for the health, safety and well being of each camper in the assigned group. Follow all policies and procedures in regards to camper/staff safety.

Be responsible for submitting weekly planning sheets the week prior to implementation of planned activities.

Attend all staff meetings, conferences, etc., as required during the term of employment.

As a condition of employment: It is mandatory that all counselors attend all pre-camp staff training sessions assigned. (Dates will be specified on your employment contract).

Be responsive to any additional duties or functions as designated by the Camp Director (i.e., extended hours, special events, etc).

Report promptly to Camp Director any dangerous or difficult situations that may arise.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be 16 years or older and very responsible.

Must be of high moral character.

Must have experience in supervising youth groups in organized activities.

Must possess an awareness and understanding of the needs and desires of camp age youth (ages 5 through 12).

Must be aware of the behavioral characteristics of camp youth.

Must be able to exercise proper judgment when dealing with the group of campers.

Must be experienced in program planning, i.e., sports, games, art, nature, etc.

Must have or obtain CPR, basic first aid, and medication administration certifications.

Must have some knowledge of an appreciation for the outdoors.

Must be in good physical condition (doctor’s certificate required) and able to carry out assigned duties.

Must have the ability to relate cooperatively to the Camp Director, other counselors and parents on any issues pertinent to the efficient operation of the camp.

Must be self-motivated.
