The Assisted Living Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for overseeing the nursing and clinical care operations in an assisted living facility. This leadership role ensures the highest standard of resident care, while managing the nursing team, developing individualized care plans, and ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines. The Director of Nursing works closely with residents, families, and staff to promote a safe, supportive, and compassionate environment that meets each resident's medical and personal care needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Nursing Leadership and Management:

    • Oversee and manage all aspects of the nursing department, ensuring that residents receive high-quality, person-centered care.
    • Lead, supervise, and mentor nursing staff, including registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and certified nursing assistants (CNAs).
    • Ensure adequate staffing levels, and manage scheduling to meet the care needs of residents.
    • Conduct performance evaluations, provide ongoing training and professional development, and promote a positive, collaborative team environment.
  • Resident Care:

    • Develop, implement, and regularly review individualized care plans for residents, ensuring that they address both clinical and personal care needs.
    • Monitor resident health status, making adjustments to care plans and coordinating with healthcare providers as necessary.
    • Ensure that nursing care aligns with best practices, facility policies, and regulatory requirements.
    • Address and resolve any resident or family concerns related to nursing care, promoting a high level of satisfaction.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance:

    • Ensure that nursing services comply with all local, state, and federal regulations, including those related to assisted living and long-term care.
    • Prepare for and participate in regulatory inspections, audits, and surveys.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical documentation, including resident assessments, care plans, and nursing notes.
    • Implement and monitor quality improvement initiatives to enhance resident care and address areas for improvement.
  • Collaboration with Healthcare Providers:

    • Coordinate with physicians, therapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that residents receive comprehensive care.
    • Facilitate communication between residents, families, and healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care and optimal health outcomes.
    • Participate in resident care conferences, providing nursing expertise to help make informed decisions about treatment and care plans.
  • Family and Resident Engagement:

    • Build and maintain strong relationships with residents and their families, keeping them informed about health status, treatment options, and changes in care plans.
    • Act as a liaison between residents, families, and nursing staff, ensuring open and effective communication.
    • Provide education and support to residents and their families regarding health conditions, medications, and lifestyle changes.
  • Budget and Resource Management:

    • Collaborate with the facility's leadership team to develop and manage the nursing department budget.
    • Ensure that nursing resources, including medical supplies and equipment, are used efficiently and effectively.
    • Identify opportunities to optimize care delivery and reduce unnecessary costs without compromising resident care.
  • Education: Associates degree in Nursing (ASN) required. A Bachelor's or Masters degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is preferred.
  • Licensure: Must hold an active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 2-3 years in a leadership or supervisory role, preferably in assisted living, long-term care, or a similar healthcare setting.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership and team management skills.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities.
    • In-depth knowledge of nursing practices, regulations, and clinical care standards in assisted living.
    • Ability to handle complex situations with professionalism and compassion.
    • Proficiency in clinical documentation and health management systems.
