Job Summary: The Timber Buyer is responsible for sourcing and purchasing standing timber from landowners and other sources in Western Louisiana and East Texas. This role requires developing and maintaining strong relationships with landowners, negotiating timber sales, and coordinating harvests of tracts purchased. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of forestry practices, local markets, and the ability to assess timber value accurately.
Primary Responsibilities:
Timber Procurement:
- Identify, inspect, and assess standing timber tracts for potential purchase
- Negotiate purchase agreements with private landowners, corporate landowners, and other sellers
Landowner Relations:
- Build and maintain positive relationships with landowners and forestry consultants
- Serve as a point of contact for landowners throughout the timber sale process
- Provide guidance on sustainable forest management and harvesting practices
- Harvest Planning & Coordination:
- Coordinate timber harvest operations with logging crews and contractors
- Monitor harvesting operations to ensure safety, efficiency, and environmental protection
Market Analysis:
- Stay updated on timber market trends and pricing in Louisiana and Texas
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, or a related field (preferred)
- Relevant work experience may be considered instead of a degree
Experience:
- 2 years of experience in timber procurement, forestry management, or a related field preferred but not required
- Experience in Louisiana’s timber industry is a plus
Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret maps, aerial photos, and land surveys
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (Microsoft Office, GIS tools)
