Description

Position Summary

The Walsh University Campus Police Department is a comprehensive full-service police department that exists to serve and protect our students, faculty, staff and guests. Our mission is to provide a safe and secure living and learning environment by actively partnering with the campus community. As such, we take a proactive and progressive approach to campus policing, utilizing a community policing model in dedication to the protection of life and property; the preservation of peace, order and safety; the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws as well as university policies and procedures.

The department recognizes that learning occurs both in and outside of the classroom and is committed to supporting student's academic and co-curricular experience by helping them make good decisions about the activities they engage. We understand the importance of developing positive relationships with students so that we can effectively serve, mentor and educate them.

The Campus Police Officer position provides public safety, law enforcement and security services for all Walsh University owned and operated property.  The position  requires officers to uphold a service-oriented attitude, flexibility, ability to exercise discretion, and a strong moral and ethical character.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Patrol the campus on a regular basis to maintain good order, safety, and security.
  • Patrol by vehicle and by foot to detect and deter crime.
  • Ensure physical security of property and assessing building and campus entry points.
  • Control parking by ticketing violators and preparing lot(s) for special events.
  • Lock and unlock buildings and rooms as required/ requested by authorized members of the campus community.
  • Work closely with the Residence Life staff in matters of student conduct.
  • Prepare and maintain records, reports and correspondence in compliance with University business practices and local, state and federal laws.  Maintain confidentiality of reports and records, and deal on a continual basis with extremely sensitive information, regulating the proper sharing of that information.
  • Complete investigations in a timely manner.
  • Work night shift, with the potential for extra duty assignments, and special details.
  • Support the mission and values of the police department and Walsh University.
  • Must maintain an Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy (OPOTA) basic officer certification while employed.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Required Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

Must understand and support the Mission, Vision and Code of Ethical Conduct of Walsh University, as a Catholic higher education university as expressed in Ex Corde Ecclesiae, and possess the following:

 

Education:

A minimum educational attainment of a high school diploma or GED; at least 21 years of age at the time of the original appointment; valid Ohio Drivers' License, physical and mental state of fitness to adequately perform the essential job functions; an Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy (OPOTA) basic officer certification. Ability to meet the agency firearms qualifications.

Work Experience:

Be able to work effectively with students, faculty and staff.   Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.  Computer skills, email, word processing and data entry necessary. Applicant must be of good moral character with a clear arrest and driving record.  A campus policing background is helpful but not necessary.

Skills and abilities: 

Professional demeanor and ability to interact with charity towards students, staff and faculty.  Positive attitude is a must.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions.

Working conditions vary by shift. The majority of tasks are performed outside while working from a patrol vehicle or on foot patrol. Few tasks require heavy lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying heavy loads but such activity is to be expected. Flexibility is important because of the need to enter and exit vehicles frequently, inspect buildings, climb over and around obstacles, suddenly move out of the way of dangers, etc. Must be able to physically subdue and restrain potentially violent persons. Mental alertness is very important because of the need to make fine discriminations and decisions concerning subtle cues of impending danger or to discover inconsistencies in witnesses' or suspects' testimonies, etc. Physical and mental demands may change dramatically within a few seconds and tax the maximum of human endurance. Employees must maintain a physical and mental state of fitness and readiness that will enable them to handle, with minimal force and often without backup, recurrent contacts and involvements with dangerous and potentially dangerous people, animals, and events. Jobholder will have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other contagious pathogens.
