Description
Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellowship
The Walters Art Museum seeks an outstanding junior scholar who wishes to pursue a curatorial career for an Andrew W. Mellon postdoctoral fellowship. For its term of two years (with the possibility of renewal for a third year), the fellowship will provide curatorial training and support scholarly research related to the collections of the Walters. Widely regarded as one of the finest museums in the United States, the Walters possesses a collection that spans seven millennia of art from cultures across the world. Applications are currently sought from scholars of the history of European and / or American decorative arts, design, and material culture of the 18th through early 20th centuries.
The Mellon Fellow will be fully integrated into the Curatorial Department and have the opportunity to work closely with the curatorial team as well as staff in other parts of the museum including conservation, collections care, gallery interpretation, and education. The fellow will have access to the museum collection, research libraries both within the museum and in the region, and will enjoy all the professional privileges of the museum's staff.
The fellow will work closely with and be supervised by the curator of decorative arts and design. Major duties will include helping to develop and realize a new installation of the European and North American 18th and 19th century art, conducting research on and cataloguing decorative arts and design objects in the collection, and assisting with the accession process for promised gifts of 19th-century ceramics entering the collection in the next several years, and engaging in general curatorial activities. In consultation with the supervising curator, the fellow also will develop a concrete project intended to complement personal research interests and will present this project as an exhibition or installation as well as a publish on this project. The fellow will be expected to participate in the museum’s education and public programs and deliver public lectures and gallery talks. The fellow will receive an annual stipend plus benefits and a travel allowance.
