Job Description
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to; Responsible for management and direction of all employees assigned to afternoon, night, weekend, and holiday shifts, in collaboration with department managers. Responsible to ensure cost effective quality patient care is given. Facilitates care coordination on their respective shift with the nursing staff. Facilitates staff development in cooperation with Nurse Managers and Education Department. Responsible for coordination of staff education. Other functions that may be assigned.
Responsibilities
(25%)* Determines the staff required, participates in staff assignment selection, staff reduction, or staff recruitment to safely staff departments.
(25%)* Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team and patients to ensure quality care and positive patient experience by ensuring evidence based best practices are followed.
(25%)* Assesses and develop competency of staff and directs employees by making appropriate assignments striving to maintain continuity of care. Maintains clinical expertise and serves as a role model to staff. Participates in direct patient care when appropriate. Remains available for staff consultations and recommends changes when appropriate.
(25%)* Provides up-to-date patient status report on select patients to manager/shift supervisors as needed. Provides for shift report summary to administration as appropriate.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Fosters cooperation and coordination of services among employees and departments.
Collaborates to maintain departments within volume adjusted budget and can explain/report variances to budget.
Communicate openly and freely with all employees and providers in the hospital.
Unsafe conditions are addressed promptly.
Responsible for the collaboration, development, implementation, and expansion of learning opportunities and skill development for all staff, including:
New employee orientation
Department/job specific education
Education for new services provided by the department
Assists with maintaining effective quality management/improvement program to measure, assess and improve services of the department.
Develops and maintains relationships with Physicians, surrounding hospitals, other health care agencies and community service agencies to enhance the continuity of patient care services, foster communication and understanding and market services.
Takes an active role in the regular leadership meetings to communicate and influence the direction of nursing service.
Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times toward all employees, physicians, associated staff and MyMichigan Medical Center-Gratiot customers and potential customers.
Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies.
Other duties as assigned.

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Medium. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 21-50 lbs., frequently 34-66% of the workday 20 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls and constantly (67-100% or the workday) 10 lbs.
