Job Description


DESCRIPTION: The Summer School Paraeducator, under the supervision of the Summer School Director/Supervisor, and Summer School Supervising Teachers will assist in the instructional portion of the school day. The paraeducator will work with students in small groups, in the various classrooms under the supervision of the classroom teacher. They will also do breakfast, lunch and recess supervision.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Required to have the equivalent of two years of college or pass a competency test
  • Basic knowledge in all areas of the curriculum
  • Must be willing to ask questions, take direction, and build a rapport with students and staff members
  • Must be able to work with students in small groups or on a one-to-one basis

Summer School Director/Supervisor, Summer School Teacher with whom they are assigned to work


Supervises:

No direct reports


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist individual students and small groups of students in developing skills through instructional activities, which have been assigned and organized by the professional staff. Examples of this:
  • Assist in language and skill development in reading, mathematics, social studies, and/or science
  • Independent study in the classroom or tutoring
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with multiple supervisors
  • Remain confidential regarding school matters
  • Demonstrate competency with computers (word processing, database and spreadsheets)
  • Assist the teacher in preparation, maintenance, assembling, securing, and operating instructional media and materials as directed by the professional staff
  • Assist in administering tests when needed. Collect and organize data and information as directed
  • Assist in maintaining various files and records as directed by the professional staff
  • Assist with the supervision of students in the school, in the cafeteria or playground setting
  • Assist with Migrant, Bilingual, Title I and LAP duties
  • Perform other appropriate duties as requested by the supervisor
  • Be able to work as a professional in a collaborative team
  • Create a positive rapport with students and fellow staff members


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working area will be in multiple locations (on campus) depending on the needs of the students or program. Provide assistance in the social, emotional, learning (SEL) needs of students. Provide assistance in the preparation and maintenance of educational materials. Provide assistance in the delivery and packaging of student meals if needed or supervision of meal breaks for students. Provide assistance in the reinforcement of the teacher’s directions, activities or skills to be practiced. Assignment will be determined on the needs of the students and is subject to change when the needs of the students change.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, lift, carry, move about, hear and speak. Employee may be required to perform extensive work at a computer display terminal.


Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, or consistent with the subject being taught, but can be abnormally loud on occasion.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.


The employee may be required to travel in school owned or leased vehicles while supervising and assisting students.
