JOB TITLE: Firefighter
DEPARTMENT: Fire, Ware County
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for driving a fire apparatus to and from fire scenes, suppressing fires, and maintaining fire apparatus and equipment.

MAJOR DUTIES:
• Inspects the working condition of fire equipment on a daily basis.
• Cleans and services assigned equipment, including water pumps.
• Drives fire apparatus to fire scenes.
• Assists with the completion of a variety of reports.
• Ensures that assigned apparatus is properly equipped prior to leaving to respond to fire alarms.
• Operates apparatus at fire scene, including locating water supply, monitoring hose/nozzle pressure, calculating friction loss, and establishing fire streams.
• Administers first response emergency medical care.
• Assists in supervising volunteer firefighters.
• Reports condition of apparatus and equipment to the supervisor and makes requests for repair as necessary.
• Performs housekeeping and grounds keeping duties at the station.
• Assists and/or participates in training exercises.
• Assists in hydrant, plug and line maintenance.
• Inspects buildings; completes pre-fire plans.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
• Knowledge of firefighting and rescue techniques.
• Knowledge of fire apparatus and equipment.
• Knowledge of hydraulics and fire streams.
• Knowledge of local fire codes.
• Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of streets and other local geography.
• Knowledge of hazardous materials.
• Knowledge of first aid and CPR.
• Knowledge of fire suppression techniques.
• Skill in the operation and use of fire equipment and apparatus.
• Skill in written and oral communication.
• Skill in driving in emergency situations.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Captain assigns work in terms of general instructions. Completed work is reviewed for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include state laws, county ordinances, building codes, and departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related duties in fire suppression and equipment operation. The work is complicated by emergency situations encountered at fire scenes.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to ensure the safe transportation of fire department personnel and equipment to and from fire scenes and to suppress fires. Successful performance helps ensure the protection of life and property by ensuring the timely arrival of personnel and equipment and the provision of an adequate water supply.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with departmental personnel, other emergency service providers, and the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. At fire scenes, the employee must lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and the ability to distinguish between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a station house, except while at a fire scene. At a fire scene the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, irritating chemicals, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and hazardous situations. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has functional supervision over volunteer firefighter positions on an assigned shift.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years of experience or service.
• Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
