JOB SUMMARY

Assists in directing, coordinating, and managing a U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Program in the high school to which assigned in accordance with the laws, policies, and directives of the U.S. Army, the Warren County Board of Education, Director of Army Instruction, and the School Principal to ensure that all program objectives are met.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The JROTC Army Instructor is a member of the JROTC Department and serves as an instructor in the JROTC unit. The Instructor is therefore responsible to assist in the overall program management of the JROTC unit at the school. This is not intended to be a complete list of responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so assigned.


  • Perform all specified tasks and job responsibilities as prescribed in the Cadet Command Regulations; 145-2 and 145-8-3. Ensure the school's JROTC program is managed in accordance with the Department of the Army and the Warren County Board of Education policies and regulation changes as appropriate.
  • Read and review all correspondence received from Cadet Command headquarters, Director of the Army Instruction, the school Principal to determine administrative, fiscal, operational, and logistical impacts on the individual JROTC program.
  • Inform the School Principal of Army regulations, polices, directives, and procedures affecting the operation of the JROTC program in order to ensure the Principal formulates his/her JROTC polices consistent with those of the U.S. Army.
  • In coordination with the Principal, the JROTC Army Instructor will establish standard operating procedures (SOP) relating to the administration, control, and training of JROTC Cadets.
  • These procedures will cover the standards of cadet conduct, behavior, appearance, academic grading, discipline, participation expectations, extracurricular activities, as well as the appointment, promotion, and demotion of Cadet Officers and noncommissioned officers. The SOP will be approved by the school level Principal. Maintain good relations with school authorities, faculty, and the student body.
  • Support the enrollment of students in JROTC and support school officials while executing the curriculum and the integrated co-curricular activities.
  • Prepare the annual JROTC Master Training Schedule and weekly training schedules. Ensure that all required instruction is presented and meets desired learning objectives/clear targets.
  • Ensure a cadet-grading system is established that meets Army and School standards.
  • Support the planning, coordination, preparation, execution, and recovery of the school's JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (Summer Camp) activities.
  • Promote teamwork and leadership development, and continuous improvement through completion of all required and directed U.S. Army professional development resident and Distant Learning courses, Annual Training, as well as TN State Certification for teaching on the high school level.
  • Establish and maintain an effective safety program. Ensure that appropriate "Risk Assessments" and "Risk Mitigation" steps are accomplished for all cadet training activities. Notifies appropriate school personnel and the Director of Army Instruction of all cadet injuries. Implements the emergency plan when an accident occurs.
  • Maintain contact with parents on all Cadets experiencing academic or behavioral problems.
  • Ensure JROTC unit areas are neat and orderly; display current chain of command photos, Cadet Creed, JROTC Core Abilities, and the JROTC mission statements are present.
  • Prepare field trip requests (to include "Excursion Requests" where applicable) and parental permission forms for each activity away from school in accordance with the Warren County Board of Education Policy. These forms will be retained on file throughout the current school year.
  • Establish procedures for adequate security of issued U.S. Government equipment and other supplies to prevent loss or theft. Procedures will comply with Army Regulation and Directives.


OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required by the Principal.
  • Demonstrate personal characteristics expected of all Warren County School District employees.
  • Demonstrate English proficiency in oral and writing English.
  • Complete required annual safety training as assigned by Warren County Schools (e.g., Concussion Training, Sudden Cardiac Arrest Training, First Aid/AED/CPR Certification, Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Prevention, Sexual Harassment, Youth Suicide, etc.).


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This position covers an 11-month contract period supporting planning, coordination, and execution of all JROTC Program requirements to include the annual JROTC Cade Leadership Challenge, directed professional development, and summer training conference activities. Salary will be calculated based on the Minimum Instructor Pay (MIP) computations set for by U.S. Army Cadet Command.


EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel and current U.S. Army Cadet Command.


MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Must be a Staff Sergeant or above, with W-1 through CW-4, with a minimum of ten years of honorable active duty service with no more than five years of separation time or be a retired service member of the United States Army in the grade of W-1 through CW-4 or E6 through E9 and meet Certification Requirements prescribed in Cadet Command Regulation (CCR) 145-2, and not have been retired more than five years at the time of initial employment in a JROTC position. All candidates must meet the retention medical fitness standards and height/weight standards as prescribed in AR 40-501 and CCR 145-2.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Heavy lifting (approximately 60lbs.) occasionally (over 15% and up to 40% of the time). May be exposed to noise, temperature, and weather conditions as they apply to inside and outside activities. Other physical demands that may be required are as follows:
