Construction Accountant

The Opportunity:

The Construction Accountant will oversee the financial health of a prominent commercial general contractor, by managing project accounting, financial reporting, and compliance. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong analytical skills and a deep understanding of construction accounting principles. The Construction Accountant will work closely with senior management and project teams to ensure accurate financial oversight and informed decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare and process payroll for office and field staff, including tracking certified payroll for prevailing wage projects.
• Review and record accounts payable and receivable transactions, ensuring timely payments and collections.
• Manage full-cycle accounting for construction projects, including job costing, revenue recognition, and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
• Analyze project budgets, forecasts, and variances, providing insights to project managers and leadership.
• Review and approve pay applications after project managers signoff, ensuring compliance with contract terms and client requirements.
• Monitor cash flow and prepare cash flow projections for ongoing and upcoming projects.
• Ensure compliance with tax regulations, including sales tax, use tax, and multi-state tax filings.
• Coordinate with external accountants and auditors during annual audits and tax preparation.
• Comply with internal controls to safeguard company assets and improve financial processes.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA certification is a plus.
• 4 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in construction accounting.
• Advanced proficiency in construction accounting software (e.g., Sage 300, Procore, or Viewpoint) and Microsoft Excel.
• Strong knowledge of construction financial practices, including percentage-of-completion accounting and AIA billing.
• Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide actionable recommendations.
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
• Familiarity with prevailing wage requirements, union reporting, and multi-state taxation is preferred.
• Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to present financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

Work Environment & Requirements:

• This position is on-site in an office environment
• This position is primarily a sedentary office role, requiring the ability to sit for extended periods, use a computer, and communicate effectively.
• The ability to walk, lift up to 20 lbs, and stand for long periods of time is occasionally required.
