The Humanities Department at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina, welcomes applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of History for the 2025-26 academic year.
The Department of Public Humanities: History and Philosophy, is a unique interdisciplinary program designed to make humanistic studies more applicable and accessible to everyone. By merging a deep understanding of the past with critical insights into the present, you will tackle today’s most pressing issues through meaningful and productive public discourse. This major offers a collaborative, cross-disciplinary, and rigorous learning environment where you’ll grow into a thoughtful, empathetic steward of civic discussions that reach a wide range of audiences through various forms of public engagement.
This is a 10-month teaching position with an anticipated start date of August 1, 2025, and an end date of May 31, 2026, with the possibility of a one-year renewal.
Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will teach courses in world histories and specialize in at least one world region. The Department is also open to expertise on all themes, including (but not exclusively) intellectual history, histories of race, gender, and sexuality, and international and/or comparative politics. Successful candidates will foster meaningful mentoring relationships with students; create interdisciplinary, experiential, and/or applied learning opportunities; contribute to the life of the Department and the College; and maintain a productive research agenda.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in History. ABD candidates will be considered;
- One year of teaching experience;
- Evidence of experience and excellence in teaching undergraduates;
- Teaching experience specializing in at least one world region such as Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin American, and/or Middle East;
- Demonstrated experience with advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in learning spaces, or relevant lived experience. For instance, experience incorporating inclusive teaching modalities and working with diverse student populations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- One or more years of full-time teaching experience as the instructor of record at the undergraduate level;
- Evidence of experiential and applied learning pedagogy.
