Custodian Job Description
Job Title: Custodian Reports to: Maintenance Director
Classification: Non-Certified Educational Support Personnel Exempt/Non-Exempt Status: Non-Exempt
Licenses/Certificates Required: High School diploma or equivalent, demonstrated ability, aptitude and
competence for position. Hold a valid Illinois Driver’s License.
Evaluation Cycle: Annually
Purpose of the Job: To maintain an attractive, sanitary, neat, clean and safe school facility for students, staff and public.
Duties:
1. Clean the following areas daily: classrooms, offices, library, and band room. Including but not limited to: sweep and dust classroom floors (including corners); remove gum from carpets and floor tile; spot clean carpets; remove graffiti on walls, desks, etc; clean chalkboards/white boards and trays; empty pencil sharpeners, empty trash cans and change light bulbs as needed
2. Clean restrooms daily. This includes emptying wastebaskets; mop and disinfect floors; clean and disinfect sinks, mirrors, toilets and urinals; empty sanitary napkin receptacles; check and fill soap, paper towels and toilet paper. Remove graffiti as needed.
3. Clean Hallways and Entryways daily: Including but not limited to: sweep and mop floors; run floor machines; vacuum entryway carpets; clean glass doors and window ledges; dust top of lockers as needed.
4. Clean the following twice a week: stage and storerooms, wrestling and weight rooms
5. Athletic fields, restrooms and concession stands will be cleaned twice a week during the season or as directed by supervisors. The press box will be cleaned as needed during fall and spring sports events.
6. The gymnasium will be cleaned before and after every athletic event, including the boys’ and girls’ locker rooms.
7. Set up and tear down tables and chairs for breakfast, lunch and school events.
8. Cafeterias and Cafetorium are to be cleaned and maintained daily and throughout the day. Wastebaskets should be emptied after each lunch period; wipe down tables, clean up spills in the and make sure area is clearly marked for safety purposes; spot clean walls as needed; run the floor machine after lunch
9. Clean all stairwells in the school complex
10. Make a list of supplies needed at the end of the shift
11. Report items needing major and/or immediate repair to supervisor(s)
12. Report in to principal periodically as to whereabouts
13. Perform minor repairs as needed or upon request
14. Evaluates situations (i.e. involving students, staff, parents, the public, etc) for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution
15. Attends in-service training for the purpose of receiving information and improving procedures. Follows all safety standards and training guidelines.
16. Reports signs of abuse or maintenance issue to supervisor
17. Assist with unloading of supplies
18. Properly maintain tools and equipment so they remain clean and in good working order
19. Snow removal from entryways and sidewalks
20. Be aware of anything that might present a danger to students and staff. Take necessary safety precautions to provide a safe environment conducive to learning.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne participles, risk of electrical shock
and vibration. Work involves exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals, and smells commonly associated with schools in general.
