What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Operator position at Warrick County Government?
DUTIES:
Operates various equipment in removing weeds, brush, and tress from easements, ditches and rights-of-ways as assigned, such as chain saws, mowers, bush hog, weed trimmer, pruner, rake, and woodchipper.
Maintains a safe and timely completion of work assignments with proper use, care, and maintenance of utility equipment, tools, and vehicles. Maintains frequent communication with foreman and/or Storm Water Director.
Documents and reports daily project progress with supervisor, with completion dates for MS4 compliance.
Receives and responds to inquiries, requests, and complaints from the public regarding condition of drainage easements, ditches, and storm water drain pipes.
Removes and disposes tree trunks, limbs, branches, and other materials to the Warrick County landfill.
Assists in maintaining service records of utility equipment, surveying for boundary line detection, and usage of remote robotic camera for filming pipe blockages.
Digs, shovels, trenches, and hauls and excavates large amounts of dirt to and from project sites.
Operates excavating and landscaping equipment and all Storm Water equipment.
Maintains mechanical repairs and monitors utility equipment.
Retrieves material and special equipment from vendors as needed or assigned.
Performs related duties as assigned.
I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
High school diploma or GED. Related experience preferred.
Ability to meet all County hiring requirements, including passage of a medical exam and a drug test.
Thorough knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures, including OHSA guidelines.
Working knowledge of assigned Department heavy equipment/trucks and ability to safely load and haul materials, clear winter roads, and complete related maintenance and safety measures.
Working knowledge of local geography and ability to read and interpret local maps.
Ability to operate various hand and power tools, such as hammers, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, power saws, files, driver, power saw, road saw, brush cutter, chipper, chain saw, air nozzle and compressor, grinder, cutting torch, forklift, pressure washer, steam cleaner, grease gun, chain sharpener, shovels, rakes, and other hand or power tools as required for work assignments.
Ability to physically perform assigned duties, including driving for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds, shoveling, digging, raking, pushing/pulling objects, bending, crouching/kneeling, reaching, standing/walking for long periods, walking on rough terrain, close/far vision, color/depth perception, hearing sounds, and handling/grasping/fingering objects.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out oral and written instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
Ability to complete required paperwork, such as daily work reports.
Ability to use shop mathematics and read/interpret maps, technical manuals, instruments, gauges, and dials.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, often at a strenuous pace, and on several tasks at the same time.
Ability to occasionally work extended hours and weekends.
Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License with required endorsements and demonstrated safe driving record.
II. RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent’s work priorities are primarily determined by supervisor, with assignments performed according to specialized instructions and clarifications are given by supervisors in regard tounusual or difficult assignments. Majority of work is reviewed in process and upon completionto ensure proper work sequences and adherence to instructions.
Incumbent reports directly to Foreman.
III. PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Incumbent's duties including driving for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing in excessof 50 pounds, shoveling, digging, raking, pushing/pulling objects, bending, crouching/kneeling,reaching, standing/walking for long periods, walking on rough terrain, close/far vision, color/depthperception, hearing sounds, and handling/grasping/fingering objects.
IV. WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbent performs a majority of duties in heavy equipment and outdoors, and is frequentlyexposed to normal hazards associated with maintaining a landfill and related equipment, such asmachinery, traffic, noise, grease, dirt, dust, vehicle fumes, extreme temperatures and inclementweather. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others.
Incumbent occasionally works extended hours and weekends.
