What are the responsibilities and job description for the Environmental Health Specialist position at Waseca County?
Under general supervision of the Le Sueur-Waseca Community Health Supervisor in collaboration with Public Health Director/ Community Health Administrator, the Environmental Health Specialist is responsible for scheduling and conducting a variety of mandated inspections, evaluations, and permit review activities to ensure compliance with public health laws and regulations. This role involves inspecting and evaluating facilities such as food establishments, lodging, institutions, childcare centers, recreational camping areas, swimming pools, other related facilities, and housing. The specialist will enforce public health laws and rules to protect and promote the health and safety of the community, consult with industry to determine compliance or corrective action, and work with the public to promote and support healthy housing.
The incumbent exemplifies the characteristics of a collaborative, innovative and resilient work culture and models the appropriate behavior to create and maintain a resilient work culture within the department. The incumbent works in partnership with other employees, departments/divisions, agencies and the public in delivering effective and innovative services.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Biology, Physical Science, Chemistry, Environmental Health, or related field
- Ability to become a Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Sanitarian within twenty-four (24) months of hire.
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the essential duties.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience in Environmental Health field.
- Current Registration as an Environmental Health Specialist or Sanitarian
- Experience working with diverse partners
- Bilingual - Spanish
