Job Description
The Director of Business Services provides leadership for the efficient and effective management of the fiscal resources of the school district.
Responsibilities
- Communicate in a positive and effective manner with staff, community members, administration, and school board members.
- Perform tasks which require the application of independent judgment and knowledge of School Board policies, Minnesota school finance and district procedures, and school-based rules and regulations.
- Meet timelines and perform multiple tasks in an efficient manner.
- Give attention to detail.
- Work with frequent interruptions.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in school and community.
Specific Duties
Finance and Budget
- Serve as the financial advisor to the superintendent and school board recommending budgetary policies and practices that are conducive to the optimal operation of the school district.
- Responsible for the district budget calendar, bi-annual budget preparation, as well as long-range financial plans.
- Establish a budget control system and monitor the budget.
- Establish and supervise a program of accounting, cash management, and reporting for the financial affairs of the school district.
Negotiations
- Direct the preparation and collection of data pertinent to salary negotiations with all employee groups.
- Work with the superintendent to assure compliance with pay equity statutes and appropriate contract language.
- Serve as a member of the school district negotiation team when requested by the superintendent and/or school board.
Purchasing
- Develop and administer a program of purchasing supplies and equipment in accordance with district, state, and Federal policies and laws.
- Investigate quality and quantity of purchases.
- Purchase items necessary for the operation of the school district by competitive bidding, quotations, and negotiations.

District Office Services
- Supervise the employees in the district business office.
- Work with the superintendent to determine office procedures and staff needed to insure maximum efficiency.
Insurance
- Manage the school district's property and casualty insurance program.
- Manage the school district's worker's compensation insurance program.
- Serve as chairperson of the district Insurance and Safety Committee.
Public Relations
- Communicate with constituents regarding the fiscal resources of the district and other issues as directed by the superintendent and/or school board.
- Attend all school board meetings and those meetings at the local, state, or national level, which are directly applicable to the management of the business affairs of the school district.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a 4-year degree in Accounting and/or Business Administration.
- Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience, preferably in a Minnesota school district; or experience in the field of accounting, business management, or school district accounting.
