The Assistant Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) supports the programming, education, and development of the fraternity and sorority community at Washington and Lee University, which consists of 70% of the undergraduate population. Additionally, the Assistant Director contributes to the successful development and implementation of broader Student Affairs initiatives and works closely with staff, student leaders, external stakeholders, and members of the Washington and Lee community.

The Assistant Director of FSL reports to the Associate Dean of Students and is responsible for collaborative development and management of FSL programming, managing the annual Chapter Assessment Program, and supporting broader educational initiatives in collaboration with key student affairs staff members. The Assistant Director collaborates on annual FSL programs, organizational conduct processes, and annual assessment reports. Additionally, the Assistant Director serves as the primary advisor to W&L’s Panhellenic Council (PC), co-advisor to National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and works closely with relevant stakeholders in promoting and delivering educational programming, new member education, strategic initiatives, and risk management efforts.

Essential Functions:
  • Serves as the primary adviser to the Panhellenic Council (PC), co-advises all National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Chapters, and supports the broader fraternity and sorority life (FSL) community.
  • Attends panhellenic meetings to ensure all business is conducted in accordance with Panhellenic bylaws, NPC policies, and University policies.
  • Serves as an advocate and resource for FSL organizations and respective council officers, chapter officers, active members, new initiates, and potential new members.
  • Advises panhellenic organizations about their rights and responsibilities within the context of the University and surrounding community.
  • Communicates consistently and effectively with student leaders, inter/national organization headquarters, and house corporation representative to shape and positively influence chapter members.
  • Supports the Associate Dean with the strategic initiatives of the division of student affairs as requested.
  • Actively participates in meetings, committees, and participates in professional development activities on and off campus.
  • Manages the Annual Chapter Assessment Program for all FSL organizations including data collections, review, and grading processes, and updating the FSL Scorecards that are shared with the W&L community and external stakeholders.
  • Mediates and supports FSL organizations when concerns arise and provides interventions and potential resolutions when appropriate.
  • Remains updated on, upholds, and interprets University policy to educate students in a consistent manner.
  • Assists with budgets by analyzing expenditures, preparing reports, and monitoring levels.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A bachelor’s degree is required. A master’s degree in counseling, higher education, student personnel or a related degree is preferred.
  • Two or more years of experience, through membership or direct advisement, of Fraternity & Sorority Life or experience in student affairs work related to organizational conduct, leadership and development, or student activities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to remain flexible, adaptable, and effective while maintaining a high quality of work.

Minimum Pay:
$60,804.00 - Pay Commensurate with Experience
Campus Safety and Welfare Responsibilities:
  • This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) in accordance with the Clery Act. This position is required to report Clery qualifying crimes to the Department of Public Safety and complete annual training about your reporting responsibilities under the law.
Physical Requirements:
  • Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as in handling.
  • Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Repetitive motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
Working Conditions: The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
