As part of the Public Safety Administrative Team, provides leadership and supervision for the Public Safety personnel assigned to the patrol / security division of the Department of Public Safety. Schedules officer work shifts and part-time Public Safety staffing. Works with university departments to provide security for on campus events. Works with the Assistant Director to coordinate the Department’s efforts related to crime prevention and safety awareness. The Lieutenant assists in promoting the Public Safety liaison program and our community oriented public safety approach. The Lieutenant also works with the Lieutenant- Administration Commander to provide oversight and leadership for departmental training programs. May oversee specific Public Safety programs or functions according to expertise and training.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
Serves as part of the Public Safety Administrative Team. Acts as on-scene commander for events and emergencies that occur on campus. Complete the Incident Action Plans for each campus event.
Provides leadership and supervision of the Public Safety personnel assigned to the patrol division, including part time Public Safety staff, including but not limited to; scheduling, payroll, supervision, and performance evaluation, ensuring that the Department is operating in compliance with the University’s and Department’s mission, goals, policies and procedures, as well as the Department’s guiding principles.
Provides direct supervision of the Public Safety Shift Supervisors-Sergeants, who are responsible for coordination and supervision of the patrol functions of the department.
Assists in the coordination and oversight of the Department’s crime prevention and safety awareness programming, including the Public Safety liaison program.
Manages the department’s confiscated property program, including maintaining accurate and thorough records.
Manages scheduling and creates department operation plans for campus special events including athletics, move-in days, Commencement, Alumni and Parents Weekends, and other large campus events. Works with University departments to provide security for on campus events as needed.
In coordination with the Lieutenant – Administration Commander, assists with department training programs, including making recommendations on changes / updates to the programs and maintaining accurate and thorough records.
Other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Associates degree in Criminal Justice or related field from an accredited college or university. Bachelor’s degree preferred. In lieu of degree, a combination of education and significant experience from which a similar skillset would be obtained may be considered.
Must have valid certification through VA DCJS as a Campus Security Officer, or be able to obtain certification within 180 days of hire. Must be able to be recertified as required and maintain valid certification at all times during term of employment.
Prior law enforcement or security experience preferred. Prior supervisory experience preferred.
Must possess a high degree of reliability, ability to maintain high degree of confidentiality, and ability to work independently.
Must display the ability to relate well to students, faculty and a diverse community.
A valid Virginia driver’s license and a good driving history.
Must be able to pass an extensive background check.
Position requires ability to work nights, weekends, holidays and overtime hours as necessary. On occasion, some travel (including overnight) may be required for off-campus trainings / conferences.

Campus Safety and Welfare Responsibilities :
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) in accordance with the Clery Act. This position is required to report Clery qualifying crimes to the Department of Public Safety and complete annual training about your reporting responsibilities under the law.
Physical Requirements :

Types of Work : Light work : Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and / or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and / or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and / or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
