Job Opportunity: Art Handler (Part-Time, Independent Contractor), Washington County Museum of Fine Arts (WCMFA)
The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts seeks art handlers to help with installing temporary exhibitions and museum displays. Reporting to the Manager of Collections & Exhibitions, Art Handlers are responsible for ensuring the safe movement and display of art and artifacts in special exhibitions. Ideal for working artists, graduate students, or those with flexible schedules, this is a part-time as needed position, with an estimated 250–350 hours of work annually.

Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, and with a collection of more than 6,500 objects, WCMFA is the only fine art museum within a 65-mile radius. Free to the public, WCMFA has an ambitious schedule of temporary exhibitions, classes, lectures, concerts, and online interpretive programs. Responsibilities
- Support Manager of Collections & Exhibitions in handling, moving and installing decorative arts, artwork, and artifacts.
- Ensure the safety of property, and adhere to professional standards of care and handling
- Assist Manager of Collections & Exhibitions in Installing/de-installing artworks during onsite projects using proper techniques and tools
- Load/unload trucks to ensure safe transit of objects to and from the museum for exhibition
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and take direction well
Qualifications
· Knowledge of standard museum procedures with an emphasis on
object handling and care desirable.
- Comfortable using manual and power tools.
- Experience preferred; background in the arts desirable
- High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
- Self-motivated with Upbeat and professional demeanor
- Excellent communication skills, along with good listening skills; team player
- Physical Requirements: lifting, moving heavy objects, bending, kneeling, crouching, etc…
- Must be able to stand for extended periods and lift some heavy items on their own.
Working conditions and physical requirements:
Position involves two distinct working environments. The typical office environment requires sitting, walking, bending, reaching, climbing stairs, and positioning some heavy items. The gallery environment requires lifting and positioning some heavy objects, climbing ladders, carefully moving objects using carts, painting pedestals, patching walls, and assisting with packing and unpacking shipments of art objects.
Compensation: $25/hr based on experience.
