Position Title: School Bus Driver
Reports To: Transportation Director & School Administrators
Supervises: N/A
Job Description: Under general supervision, the school bus driver’s greatest responsibility is to transport students to and from school safely and on schedule. The school bus driver is responsible for students on the bus just as the teacher is responsible for students in the classroom. The school bus driver should always drive defensively and be careful not to commit driving errors. The school bus driver performs pre-trip inspections before each trip to find problems that could cause a crash or breakdown. By North Carolina law, every school bus driver must have a valid health certificate. All School Bus Drivers shall possess a CDL Class B with a P and S endorsement, and a school bus certificate. Driver applicant must complete three days of bus class and pass four written tests. After passing all written test the applicant shall complete at least 3 days of roadwork training and pass the Pre-trip inspection test, skill control, and road test. Applicant must have a good driving record, be physically and mentally competent to operate a school bus with ease and have no conviction of a felony within the last 5 years.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Make bus inspection before each trip to check items as required by state and federal regulations
Make a report in writing of mechanical defects, malfunctions, damage, etc to the Principal.
Provide safe, punctual and professional transportation of students assigned to bus
Drive on assigned route and obeys all state and local traffic laws Washington County Board of Education policies, rules and regulations
Attend state, county and system safety meetings or courses which are required for reemployment
Maintain discipline on the bus and reports incidents of misconduct to the Principal at the end of each run
Remain on bus while students are loading and unloading
Report to work at the assigned time
Meets and communicates with parents and administrators as required
Keep exterior and interior of assigned bus clean
Submit to drug substance test provided by the Washington County Board of Education
Report serious offenses in a timely manner
Promptness in completion of reports
Accuracy and neatness of reports in reports turned in.
Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor
