Washington Gas is seeking an Assistant General Counsel – Environment and Climate to provide critical legal expertise in climate and environmental matters. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape policy, drive impactful legal solutions, and be part of the conversation around creating energy solutions for the future.
What You’ll Do
Provide Expert Counsel on Climate and Environmental Law
- Advise on climate and environmental matters, including emissions, enterprise-wide climate strategies, utility regulatory proceedings, administrative rulemakings, and support related litigation, including administrative proceedings and appeals.
- Track developments in environmental law and climate policy, applying insights to regulatory filings, rate cases, and utility operations.
- Develop and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies and industry associations.
Collaborate and Develop Expertise
- Navigate a high-volume, dynamic practice driven by evolving climate policy and energy transition goals.
- Work closely with subject matter experts to expand WGL’s legal capacity in climate and environmental issues.
- Partner with internal stakeholders and external agencies on rulemaking and emerging policies like clean heat standards and natural gas customer choice initiatives.
- Learn, grow, and contribute to the evolution of the environmental practice while playing a key role in succession planning and capacity building within WGL’s legal team, with opportunities to broaden expertise into traditional environmental law or energy regulation.
Who You Are
- Experienced Legal Professional: Juris Doctor required, with at least 5 years of legal experience in environmental or energy law. Membership in good standing of at least one state bar, one of which must be in the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia.
- Versatile Expertise: Background in environmental law (e.g., Clean Air Act, emissions, climate), energy law, or administrative proceedings is essential. Litigation experience is beneficial.
- Adaptable and Forward-Thinking: Comfortable with change, driven by policy evolution, and excited to develop expertise in a unique and impactful practice area.
- Strong Collaborator: Able to work effectively with stakeholders across regulatory, policy, and compliance areas. Experience with rulemaking or administrative law is a plus.
- Preferred Background: Experience at a large or regional law firm with energy clients or within an energy company is highly desirable.

Salary : $163,000 - $238,500
