A Material Handler focuses on ensuring that raw materials, components, and finished products are available where and when they are needed in the production process. This role is crucial for maintaining the flow of production and minimizing downtime.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receiving Materials:
- Accept incoming shipments of raw materials or parts.
- Verify shipment accuracy by checking invoices, packing slips, and material quantities.
- Inspect materials for damage or quality issues and report discrepancies.
- Storing and Organizing Materials:
- Properly store materials in designated areas (e.g., shelves, racks, or bins) to ensure easy access and avoid cross-contamination.
- Label materials with appropriate tags to ensure correct identification during the production process.
- Inventory Management:
- Track inventory levels to ensure that materials are available for production.
- Perform regular inventory counts and report low stock levels to supervisors.
- Use inventory management systems to update and maintain records.
- Material Movement:
- Transport materials to production lines using material handling equipment (e.g., forklifts, pallet jacks, conveyors).
- Ensure timely and accurate delivery of materials to the correct production stations or departments.
- Maintain organized work areas to avoid delays in production.
- Quality Control:
- Monitor the condition of materials and report any damaged or defective materials to supervisors.
- Ensure that materials meet the necessary quality standards before being used in production.
- Order Fulfillment for Production:
- Pick materials based on work orders or production schedules and ensure the right quantities are delivered.
- Assist in preparing materials for upcoming production runs.
- Packaging and Shipping:
- Prepare finished goods for shipment by labeling and packing according to specifications.
- Assist in loading materials onto shipping trucks.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to safety protocols when operating material handling equipment and working in production areas.
- Ensure that materials are stored in accordance with safety regulations (e.g., hazardous materials may require specific handling and storage conditions).
- Maintenance and Cleaning:
- Keep material handling equipment in good working condition, report maintenance needs, and keep work areas clean and organized.
Required Skills:
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift and move heavy materials (up to 50 lbs or more).
- Forklift Certification: Ability to operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment.
- Attention to Detail: Ensuring accurate material handling, inventory tracking, and order fulfillment.
- Organizational Skills: Maintaining proper storage, labeling, and tracking systems.
- Communication Skills: Coordinating with supervisors, production teams, and other departments.
- Problem-Solving: Addressing material shortages, quality issues, or logistical problems in the production process.
Education/Experience:
- Education: Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: 3 years previous experience in a warehouse or manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Certifications: Forklift operation certification.
This role is vital for maintaining the production schedule and ensuring that manufacturing processes are not delayed due to material shortages or errors.
