Marketing Statement:

The Safety Department is implementing a Safety Management System at WMATA. The Office of Safety Data Analytics is essential in the development and roll-out of SMS to guide important decisions, deliver real-time safety data, and manage our data systems. The Senior Safety Data Analyst will work closely with departments across the organization to define and deliver metrics, datasets, and analytical insights.

Key skillsets include:
  • The ability to understand, join, and analyze large datasets from platforms across WMATA to produce actionable information
  • Innovative thinking to identify new and more efficient ways of working utilizing data tools such as Python
  • Curiosity to better understand internal and external customers' needs and the ability to gather requirements, manage multiple projects, and deliver high quality data products.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • Bachelors Degree in Safety, Safety Management, Transportation, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics or a related field

Experience
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience that includes data analysis, database management, delivering oral and written reports, and regulatory compliance

Certification/Licensure
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operators license

Preferred

Masters Degree or PhD in Safety, Safety Management, Transportation, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics or a related field

Summary

The Senior Safety Data Analyst supports the Office of Safety Data Analytics within the Department of Safety and Environmental Management (SAFE) by identifying and analyzing leading and lagging indicators of organizational performance and safety culture, including, but limited to: accident and incident reports, supervisory safety observations, work orders, and key performance indicators. The Senior Safety Data Analyst will provide mentorship and support to junior analysts. The incumbent supports implementation of Safety Management System and helps to maintain compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Recordkeeping and National Transit Database (NTD) reporting requirements. The Senior Safety Data Analyst may be required to participate in emergency response or on-call rotations, to promote the Authoritys transit-support goals.

Essential Functions
  • Conducts complex trend analyses utilizing data from across WMATA to identify incident trends and hazards across WMATA and help develop intervention strategies to reduce accident and injuries and enhance awareness
  • Provide guidance to junior analysts for advanced analytics providing support to internal customers in identifying safety trends
  • Works with junior analysts to filter and clean raw data by reviewing primary and secondary sources to correct errors in data entry and provide inputs for trend analysis
  • Prepares analytical reports related to leading and lagging indicators of safety performance that support internal and external customers, by informing internal and external stakeholders of incident trends and hazards across WMATA including Rail, Bus and Paratransit systems.
  • Identifies business process improvements during the collecting, storing, and manipulation stages of data analysis utilizing tools such as Python, Cognos, and PowerBI and translates these process improvements into standard operating procedures and/or partners with IT to document requirements for system enhancements, to improve efficiency and accuracy of analysis conducted and communicate improvements to IT
