Minimum Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or possession of a high school equivalency certificate (GED).
Experience
- Minimum six (6) years of garage mechanic exposure or related field
Certification/Licensure
- Must satisfactorily pass all required internal certification/promotion tests
- Must have Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician certification
- Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

Job Summary
The Bus Reliability Technician accountability entails inspection, disassembly, repair, assembly and/or installation of bus engines, transmissions, large and small electric/pneumatic/hydraulic components, chassis and vehicle body repairs for the bus fleet. The incumbent initiates and completes repairs, surveys, reports and maintenance data collection forms. These responsibilities are associated with the technical aspects of maintenance control for bus data systems.
Essential Functions
- Adjusts equipment to ensure optimal performance. Aligns equipment or machinery. Assists division with finding parts.
- Assists higher-classified employees with completion of work assignments.
- Conducts vehicle or transportation equipment tests, using diagnostic equipment. Diagnoses problems to determine required repairs.
- Evaluates new methods of packaging, testing, shipping, or transporting hazardous materials to ensure adequate public safety protection. Compiles, codes, categorizes, and calculates information or data.
- Examines carrier operating rules, employee qualification guidelines, or carrier training and testing programs for compliance with regulations or safety standards.
- Inspects equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors, problems, or defects. Inspects vehicles or equipment to ensure compliance with rules, standards, or regulations. Inspects vehicles or other equipment for evidence of abuse, damage, or mechanical malfunction. Installs, fabricates, and repairs equipment.
- Issues notices and recommends corrective actions when infractions or problems are found.
- Monitors equipment and system operations to detect causal errors. Operates test equipment. Operates transportation equipment to demonstrate function or malfunction.
- Performs routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups.
- Prepares accident or incident reports. Prepares data and reports on investigations, inspections, and actions taken. Recommends changes or corrective procedures.
- Repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers. Repairs manual and automatic transmissions.
- Represents WMATA to customers, the public, government, and other external sources. Resolves issues affecting transportation operations.
- Services vehicles to maintain functionality. Tabulates, audits, or verifies information or data.
- Tests materials, solutions, or samples. Tests mechanical systems to ensure proper functioning.
- Generates reports and documents for management and analysis.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Operates WMATA vehicles. Trains lower-classified employees.
