JOB TITLE: RN-Ambulatory Surgery Center
REPORTS TO: ASC Medical Director

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB:
Washington Orthopaedic Center is a leading provider of high-quality orthopedic surgical care in Centralia, Washington. Our state-of-the-art Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) is dedicated to delivering exceptional patient experiences and surgical outcomes. We are seeking a dynamic and experienced RN to join our dedicated team and ensure the smooth operation of our center.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The ASC Nursing staff follows established standards, practices, and protocols to provide professional, quality and compassionate nursing care for ASC patients.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
· Maintain a friendly, positive, and caring attitude with all patients, physicians, and staff.
· Prepare for the arrival of patients by ensuring that the proper supplies and equipment are available.
· Review patient charts prior to arrival to be familiar with patient history and patient needs.
· Ensure readiness of ASC per protocols.
· Greet patient and verify information in accordance with standard procedural protocol.
· Assess the patient, check vital signs, start IV, administer medications as necessary and prep the patient as needed.
· Review pre-op orders for completeness.
· Check with operating room staff and anesthesia to verify all needed equipment for the procedure is available and in working order.
· Position and prep patient according to appropriate procedural protocol.
· Assist anesthesia, surgeon and scrub personnel as needed.
· Document patient care/charges per protocol.
· Assist in recovery/patient stabilization per standard procedural protocol.
· Responsible for stocking the OR and notifying purchasing of supplies that are needed.
· Responsible for the setting up of the room for the next days’ cases.
· Is prepared for emergency situations by knowing correct procedures.
Pre-Op Teaching:
· Review health history with patient, perform BP check, draw any required labs/EKG, obtain office notes or outside tests/studies for review by anesthesia.
· Communicate pre-op and post-op instructions with the patient and family, answering questions as needed.
· Document patient care thoroughly.
· Responsible for re-stocking the teaching room for the following day.
Float Nurse:
· Turns over room between cases and prepares for the next procedure.
· Able to wash instruments as needed.
· Pre-op patients waiting for surgery.
· Pick surgery items for the next surgical day.
Circulator:
· Open OR per protocol.
· Set up OR for cases using proper sterile technique.
· Introduce yourself to patients and family in the pre-op area. Verify name, DOB, operative site, allergies, and other pertinent info. Check chart for completeness (consent, H & P, Rx.)
· Assist anesthesia to make sure they have the proper drugs and supplies. Help with induction and blocks, if necessary
· Assist with transport of the patient to the operating room.
· Correctly position patient for the procedure, using proper techniques. Document thoroughly
· Monitors for breaks in sterile technique.
· Performs sponge and needle counts as appropriate.
· Performs surgical prep per protocol.
· Performs surgical site verification/time out per policy with surgeon, scrub, and anesthesia.
· Monitors patients with local anesthesia as necessary
· Is prepared for emergency situations by knowing correct procedures and locations of call system.
· Monitors that universal precautions are maintained.
· At the end of the procedure, the nurse will assist with securing dressings, moving patients to the gurney and assisting with anesthesia as necessary.
· Label and send specimens to pathology. Document on computer log in OR
· Transport the patient to PACU or phase 2 (step down) after giving a thorough report to the PACU nurse.
· Assists PACU as necessary.
· Complete and document thoroughly on OR record and input all surgery items for charge/inventory purposes.
· Assist in turning over room for next case.
· Restock OR as needed.
· Organize supplies and equipment, help with inventory control.
· Keep ASC director aware of equipment/instrument issues, repairs, or replacements.
PACU/Recovery Room:
· Prepare for the arrival of patients by ensuring that the proper supplies and equipment are available.
· Review patient charts to ensure that the required documentation is completed and available.
· Always communicate with the patient and family regarding post-op instructions.
· Receive patients into recovery room after surgical case is completed. Assess and evaluate the patient per ASC protocol while communicating with the Anesthesia Provider.
· Monitor the patient continually during their recovery phase and administer care accordingly.
· Document patient care thoroughly.
· Assist patient with transfer to “step down” when patient is able.
· Reunites patient and caregiver as soon as patient is able.
· Provides discharge instructions to patients and their caregivers, answering questions as needed.
· Maintains a sanitary environment by cleaning equipment and surrounding area.
· Contact patients the day after their surgery to provide ongoing assessment.
· Re-stock and set up the recovery area for the following day.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
· Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice
· Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations, and procedures to effectively administer patient care.
· Knowledge of medical/surgical equipment and instruments
· Knowledge of common safety hazards and appropriate precautions
· Skilled in applying and modifying professional nursing principles, methods, and techniques.
· Skilled in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to correspondence.
· Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
· Ability to maintain quality medical/surgical control standards.
· Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
· Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
· Ability to communicate clearly.
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, SPECIAL TRAINING:
· Graduation from RN accredited program.
· Bachelor’s degree is preferred
· CPR certification, ACLS & PALS certification within 6 months of hire.
Note: Position requires full range of body motion including but not limited to handling and lifting of patients, manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and ability to perform heavy manual procedures as required by orthopedic protocol. Requires standing and walking for prolonged periods of time. Occasionally lifts patients weighing up to 300 pounds (with assist). Requires normal visual acuity and hearing. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to clinic/hospital environments. Position also involves working under stress in emergency situations or during irregular hours.
