The Washington Spirit is seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Athletic Trainer to support the day-to-day operations of our Sports Medicine department. In this role, you'll work closely with the Head Athletic Trainer, Director of Medical, and our multidisciplinary performance team to ensure the health, safety, and performance of our athletes.
From injury prevention and on-field emergency care to rehabilitation and recovery, this position plays a vital role in our team’s success both on and off the pitch.

- Provide comprehensive care including first aid, emergency response, injury evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation.
- Administer therapeutic modalities and manual therapy techniques in accordance with personalized rehab plans.
- Support training sessions and scrimmages with setup and teardown, hydration, and sideline/emergency equipment.
- Assist in cleaning and maintaining safe training room environment.
- Clean and sterilize equipment, including but not limited to, cold tubs, hydrocollator.
- Travel to away matches and events as directed.
- Other duties as assigned by Head Athletic Trainer or Director of Medical
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team including physicians (CMO), physical therapist, chiropractor, massage therapists, and performance staff.
- Assist in the development and execution of injury prevention strategies and return-to-play protocols.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date player health records in the league’s electronic medical record (EMR) system.
- Oversee inventory, supply packing, and training room organization for home and away matches.
- Under the direction of Director of Medical, assist in the collection and reporting of staff credentials to comply with NWSL requirements.
- Follow OSHA standards and league health and safety policies.
- Assist in organizing pre-season physicals and other mandated medical exams.
- Attend required league meetings, training, and compliance sessions.
- Ensure ongoing adherence to league medical protocols and documentation practices.
Our ideal candidate:
- Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field.
- 2 years of experience as a certified athletic trainer, preferably in elite or professional sports.
- NATA BOC certification, in good standing.
- Licensed by the Virginia Department of Health as an Athletic Trainer.
- Current CPR/AED certification for healthcare providers.
- Professional liability insurance.
- Master’s degree or higher.
- Certifications such as CSCS, PES, LMT, or NREMT.
- Experience working with soccer athletes.
- Familiarity with league health regulations and protocols.
- Experience with on-field return-to-play for soccer athletes.
- Experience with EXOS performance rehab methodology.
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities are a plus.
- Dry needling credentials/certification
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail.
- Team-first attitude, collaborative spirit, and willingness to assist in all areas.
- Reliable, professional, and adaptable to a fast-paced environment.
