Remote position within the State of Washington

The WSBA's mission is to serve the public and the members of the Bar, to ensure the integrity of the legal profession, and to champion justice.

Purpose And Position Summary

Working in conjunction with the General Counsel and other Assistant General Counsels, this position will be primarily responsible for performing legal research and drafting legal memoranda; providing legal support for the WSBA accommodations for the discipline system and as appropriate for the organization; assisting discipline hearing officers, and with the custodianship program; and supporting other work of the General Counsel’s office, as needed.

Primary Job Duties And Responsibilities

Legal Research, Advise, and Counsel:

  • Assist General Counsel and other Assistant General Counsels in performing legal research, drafting legal pleadings and memoranda, gathering needed information, and providing legal advice and counsel to WSBA, its Board of Governors, the Executive Director, and to other WSBA staff and volunteers in appropriate situations.

WSBA Accommodations

  • In collaboration with an OGC paralegal, oversee and administer the accommodations program for the discipline system in accordance with applicable laws, rules, and organizational procedures; as requested, provide legal support to others in the organization related to accommodation requests and other WSBA programs and services.

Custodianship Program

  • In collaboration with an OGC paralegal, oversee and administer the custodianship program pursuant to the Rules for Enforcement of Lawyer Conduct (ELC) 7.7, including identifying cases appropriate for custodianship, moving for appointment and discharge of custodians, providing advice to custodians related to complying with required rules, recruiting and training custodians, and providing other necessary legal support to assist custodians in performing their duties and functions under the rules.

Assistance To The Chief Hearing Officer And Hearing Officers

  • Provide general oversight and assistance to the ELC 2.5 appointed Chief Hearing Officer and hearing officers, including advice related to compliance with required rules and Bylaws, assistance with recruiting, onboarding, planning and administering training, templates, reports and manuals.

Other Duties As Assigned

  • Assist with other duties as assigned by General Counsel, Assistant General Counsel, Manager, or the Executive Director, including among other things, records retention activities, instruction and training for staff and others, outside speaking engagements, public outreach, review of written materials in electronic or hardcopy form, and serving as the liaison to Boards, Councils, Committees, and Task Forces as assigned.

Education Required

  • Juris Doctor or successful completion of WSBA Law Clerk Program.

Experience Required

  • Admitted to practice of law in Washington and actively practicing and in good standing.
  • Applications from those taking the February 2025 bar exam or who otherwise anticipate admission by May 2025 may be considered.

  • Proficient in current Microsoft software and programs, Office 365, within a Windows platform
  • Possess strong technical aptitude to quickly learn other systems/software/programs, including WSBA’s existing systems

Working Conditions

This position, while primarily remote, must be flexible to work in office and travel within WA state as deemed necessary, or as required. This position primarily performs work during normal business hours. In general, however, WSBA Staff must have the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends involving overnight travel (if travel within WA is necessary). This position may also have the option to work in-office. For remote work, must have an adequate home/work environment and internet access, for performing work of a highly sensitive and confidential nature.

Employment with the Washington State Bar Association mandates that WSBA Staff must reside within the State of Washington at the time of hire, and during active employment status.

The essential functions of the job that must be performed, with or without a reasonable accommodation: able to regularly work five days per week in an office type environment (remote or in office), possess the ability to primarily sit/stand and use a computer, and lift/push/pull items weighing up to 25 pounds. Must be able to operate a computer keyboard, and other standard office equipment (e.g., printer/scanner/fax/telephone). This position must be able to read, write, and speak with others in English.
