The Motor Carrier Safety Division (MCSD), was created in May of 2013, and works alongside the Commercial Vehicle Division (CVD) in promoting the safe travel of commercial vehicles on state highways through education and enforcement. MCSD consists of the Compliance Review Section which conducts in-depth reviews of Washington based motor carriers, New Entrant Safety Audits, and five (5) Ports of Entry. MCSD also has program oversight of the Commercial Vehicle Training Section, Hazardous Materials and the School Bus Inspection Program.

Duties

The Motor Carrier Safety Division has a vacancy for a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer (CVEO) 3 as the Training Specialist. This recruitment is open as a promotional opportunity for permanent CVEO 2 employees. Eligible candidates must have two years of experience as a CVEO2 by April 1, 2025.


In addition to the duties and responsibilities for a CVEO2, this position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement CVE Detachment. This includes but is not limited to the following duties:
  • Assigns and schedules staff / officers to work specific assignments and shifts to maintain a
    comprehensive CVE program.
  • Reviews work reports; completed inspections; duty responsibilities and compile the necessary records to fairly and impartially evaluate the work progress of Commercial Vehicle Officers (CVO) 1, CVEO 1, CVEO 2 personnel.
  • Schedules all required training and monitors the progress of subordinates in each aspect of their
    assigned functions; ensuring a safe and productive work environment for each employee.
  • Provides leadership, mentoring, and coaching to subordinate personnel keeping sufficient records to recall and report to his/her supervisor.
  • Assigns on the job training monitoring work habits of subordinates in order to provide the necessary
    mentoring to develop future leaders in the agency.
  • Must accept responsibility and account for his/her actions and the actions of assigned subordinates.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be a permanent/current CVEO 2 for at least two (2) years by April 1, 2025.
  • Must possess and maintain Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Certification.
  • A valid non-probationary, non-restricted Washington State driver's license is required.
  • Possess strong written and communication skills.
  • Physically able to crawl under or climb around/over vehicles in order to inspect for compliance with state safety, proper condition, weight, height, length, width, and other configuration laws.
  • Physically capable to lift and deploy portable scales (up to 50 lbs) to weigh vehicles.
    Work in an environment that has potential for exposure to hazardous and/or radioactive material.
  • Work in potentially volatile situations with vehicle drivers, work independently - including nights, weekends and holidays in all types of weather conditions and settings, including private residences, offices, truck shops, etc., while keeping supervisor informed at all times.
  • Accept responsibility and account for his/her actions.
  • Perform work accurately and thoroughly.
  • Be organized and capable of following a systematic method of performing a task.
  • Complete tasks or continue in a course of action in spite of opposition or discouragement.
  • Be dependable and trustworthy.
  • Be accountable for one’s conduct.
  • Must be truthful and be seen as credible in the workplace.
  • This position may be expected to respond when called out for emergency situations.

Selection process will be based on a resume review, previous 2 years of evaluations, command recommendations, and Office of Professional Standards employee history. The top candidates will be interviewed.
