The Following functions have been determined by the Department to be essential to the successful performance of this position.
A. EMERGENCY RESPONSE
- The Fire Inspector / Investigator will respond to designated emergencies. The primary responsibility on scene shall be to function as Investigations.
- The Fire Inspector / Investigator ’s primary responsibility each day shall be to function as an Inspector along with other duties as assigned by the Prevention Division.
B. ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS :
Will assist in identifying goals, objectives, and budgetary needs within the Fire Prevention and Investigations Division.
C. MAINTENANCE OF PHYSICAL FITNESS
D. FOLLOW ORDERS / FUNCTION AS PART OF A TEAM
Work Environment
The working conditions of the Fire Inspector / Investigator include :
A. Assignment to a Monday thru Friday 0800-1630 at Headquarters. Some flexibility within those times, and occasional evening and / or weekend work and ongoing 24-hour emergency response.
B. Activities are divided between administrative duties, coordination of assigned Division duties, training, emergency incidents, and public service contacts.
C. Exposure to extremes in weather conditions; possible injury while riding on emergency vehicles or operating department equipment; hazards inherent to fire / haz-mat / special rescue scene and EMS incidents; mental stress generated by involvement in life and death situations; cardiovascular stress generated by movement from resting to high active states.
Requirements for Maintenance of Position
In order to maintain the position of Fire Inspector / Investigator, an individual must demonstrate expected standards of performance, conduct, and certification :
A. Throughout assignment, maintain all certifications as required by the department.
B. Throughout assignment, demonstrate expected standards of performance, conduct, follow / maintain all essential functions of the position.
C. Avoid any substance abuse or illegal behavior; demonstrate behavior worthy of public trust.
Requirements :
A. High School Diploma / GED.
B. Must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license.
C. Must be 21 years or older.
D. No felony conviction or disqualifying criminal histories.
E. U.S. Citizen.
F. Must be able to read and write the English language.
G. Hold a certification as an IDHS Fire Inspector I.
H. Hold a certification as an IDHS Fire Investigator I or equivalent.
