Brief Description of Position:
Under direction, plans, carries out and evaluates health services and health education activities as appropriate.
Supervision Exercised or Received:
Under the direction of the Director of Special Education and Evaluation Services. May plan and coordinate the work of specified classified personnel as assigned.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Works with administrators and others as a consultant in defining the health needs of students of the District, and in planning the health education programs and policies to meet these needs; interprets the policies of the Board of Education as they relate to the health program.
Makes routine health appraisals of all students and of special health problems by referral; provides health and health related counseling services to students; informs teachers of physical or health liabilities of students.
Assists in controlling communicable diseases and makes necessary reports to the County Health Department; maintains District liaison with the County Health Department and other related agencies.
Keeps adequate system of reference records and assists in health surveys of research.
Follows up on students who have been conditionally admitted to see that they complete the required immunization upon notifications.
Serves on Education Assessment Service Team for special education programs; serves on School Appraisal Team as appropriate.
Makes provisions for, or gives emergency nursing service to ill or injured students.
Supervises other State mandated programs as indicated, i.e., vision, hearing, etc.
Assists in the identification of safety and health hazards on school sites.
Serves as a health education resource person to staff and students.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Participates in the inservice education of school staffs and in teacher-nurse conferences.
Participates in community-school relations programs in matters relating to health with the leadership of site administrators and the Director of Special Education and Evaluation Services.
Makes home visits as requested by the Director and / or site administrators.
Provides information on community and county health resources and keeps the administration informed on trends and best practices in the health service field.
Keeps site administrators informed of the health services being rendered to students in their schools.
Recommends to site administrators, Educational Assessment Service or School Appraisal Teams modifications of education programs of students whose health or development status indicate special need.
Refers parents of students who need medical or welfare assistance to appropriate private or community resources.
Prepares health services reports as requested by the Director and attends meetings related to areas of responsibility, including meetings of the Board of Education when health education matters are before the Board.
Continues to grow professionally through attendance at conferences, workshops, professional meetings and college courses.
Attends meetings called by the Director, the Superintendent, or other administrators.
Participates with immediate supervisor to develop mutually the criteria by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with the District's uniform guidelines for evaluation and assessment.
Maintains punctuality for all prescribed functions.
Performs such other tasks mutually agreed upon with the Director of Special Education and Evaluation Services.
Salary : $61,852 - $120,538
