Position Summary

Position functions as an assistant to physician’s and staff in the application, maintenance, and removal of splints, casts, traction and other orthopedic medical devices. Also monitors and orders casting and other medical appliances, including instruments. Clean instruments and cast rooms as per Environmental Health and Safety regulations. Assists with cast room schedules, coverage, and efficient clinic flow. Works as a liaison between staff and management.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform splinting, casting and application of traction under the direction of an orthopedic physician or resident.

  • Apply, adjust, measure and educate patients on medical appliances and equipment.

  • Remove casts with care.

  • Perform direct and indirect patient care activities within the scope of practice of an orthopedic technologist, i.e. assisting with dressing changes, suture and staple removal, etc.

  • Document the care administered into electronic medical records.

  • Order and maintains all clinical supplies.

  • Maintain a professional demeanor and strict confidentiality as per HIPAA regulations.

  • Obtain x-rays, prepares exam rooms and monitors physician schedules as necessary.

  • Assist the Medical Assistants in clinical areas, by preparing charts, x-rays and exam rooms when necessary.

  • Adjust canes, walkers, crutches and provides ambulation instructions.

  • Perform follow-up patient calls when-needed.

  • Perform pre-surgical education on some medical appliances and equipment.

  • Assist in the training of other orthopedic technicians.

  • Assist with coordinating schedules to support the clinic and patient care.

  • Responsible for entering medical equipment appointments.

  • Review clinic paperwork for accuracy.

  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Clinical office setting with some pressure caused by adherence to patient/physician schedule.
  • May have to travel between offices.
  • Lifting patients and equipment is a regular part of the job.
  • At times, this position will assist with supervision when team leader or supervisor is absent.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within one month of hire date.

  • Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Related work experience or training as an Orthopedic Technologist, Medical Assistant, Cast Technician or Certified Athletic Trainer.

Salary Range

$17.34 - $25.40 / Hourly
