Scheduled Hours
40Position Summary
We currently seek a talented and self-motivated scientist who is looking to grow and contribute to a highly collaborative laboratory environment. The ideal applicant will have a solid foundation in several applicable skill sets and should be eager to grow and learn new techniques. The lab of Dr. Albert (Gus) Davis studies the molecular and cell biology of protein aggregation and neurodegeneration, especially in the context of Parkinson disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Using a combination of protein biochemistry, neuron and glia cell culture, and mouse models, the lab seeks to understand the molecular pathophysiology of alpha-synuclein aggregation (the main component of Lewy bodies), the gene and protein networks that regulate spreading of alpha-synuclein pathology within brain networks and the neurotoxicity and neuroinflammation that accompany this process.
Current projects in the lab include: 1) the role of apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype, the strongest genetic risk factor for DLB, 2) the role of lysosomal enzyme variants associated with genetic risk of PD, 3) microglial clearance of pathogenic alpha-synuclein aggregates, and 4) the role of the adaptive immune system in PD pathogenesis.
Core techniques include molecular cloning, recombinant protein purification, biochemical protein assays including co-immunoprecipitation, ELISA, fluorescence seed amplification, primary neuron and primary glia cell culture, flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry (including confocal and live-cell microscopy), mouse husbandry and behavioral assays, stereotaxic surgery, perfusion and tissue dissection, histology, immunohistochemistry, stereology and other image analysis, and analysis of transcriptomic and proteomic data sets.
The Davis lab seeks to provide a supportive environment to foster scientific growth and personal development. We are committed to the highest standards of scientific integrity and are motivated to solve challenging biomedical questions to pave the way for development of improved tests and treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Davis maintains a clear presence in the lab, meets regularly with individuals and team groups, prioritizes opportunities for lab member professional development, and strives to foster a dynamic and positive lab culture.
