Position Summary

The Janowski Laboratory discovers novel viruses and aims to understand how these new viruses cause disease in humans. The current focus is on astroviruses and their newly discovered capacity to cause fatal neurological diseases in humans and other mammals. We are using recent advances including brain organoids to study the viral tropism. In addition, we are using astroviruses as a model system to study critical components of the viral lifecycle. We have found an RNA element that is present in astroviruses and coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2. This element is essential for the replication cycle of astroviruses, and now we are determining how this translates to other viruses.

This position will focus on work using cutting-edge techniques to study viral infection, including a reverse genetics system for astroviruses, gene knockout cell lines, and protein-interaction assays. These projects will utilize diverse molecular biology techniques like PCR, immunofluorescence, cellular staining, flow cytometry, CRISPR, Western Blotting, and mobility shift assays.

About the lab: The lab is led by Andrew Janowski, an assistant professor and pediatric infectious disease physician-scientist. He will provide direct training and supervision.
