SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the Chief Academic Officer, the Area Superintendent is responsible for leading school principals, increasing student learning outcomes, closing achievement gaps, and improving overall performance across a designated group of schools. This executive-level position is focused on building the capacity of school principals as people and instructional leaders, ensuring that schools are fostering a principle-based culture, high-quality instruction, and strong academic achievement.

The Area Superintendent serves as a coach, mentor, and leader to school principals, helping them develop and enhance their instructional leadership skills to improve teaching and learning. This position requires a deep commitment to collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement.

An Area Superintendent may be assigned to secondary, elementary, or specialized schools, or a combination thereof.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES :

The following duties represent key responsibilities but are not exhaustive :

  • Provide direct support, coaching, and professional development to principals to enhance their instructional leadership capacities.
  • Work collaboratively with school leadership teams to analyze student achievement data and implement strategies to improve student outcomes.
  • Ensure that principals are effectively utilizing data to inform instructional practices and school improvement efforts.
  • Collaborate with district leadership and departments to align instructional supports and resources with school needs.
  • Conduct regular school visits and provide feedback to principals on instructional practices, leadership effectiveness, and operational efficiency.
  • Develop individualized Leadership Development Plans (LDPs) for each principal and monitor progress against district-established performance goals.
  • Support principals in building strong, inclusive school cultures that prioritize equity and high expectations for all students.
  • Oversee principal evaluations in accordance with district policies and state regulations.
  • Lead and participate in district-wide initiatives to enhance academic programming and instructional quality.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional learning among school leaders.
  • Establish and drive consistency across assigned schools by ensuring alignment with district policies, instructional priorities, and leadership expectations.
  • Collaborate closely with central office District personnel to support schools in implementing best practices, responding to operational needs, and streamlining processes.
  • Promote and reinforce a principle-based culture that emphasizes ethical leadership, accountability, and high standards for all students and staff.
  • Serve as a conduit between schools and central office leadership, advocating for school needs while ensuring alignment with district strategic initiatives.
  • Facilitate cross-school collaboration to share effective practices, problem-solve challenges, and support a cohesive educational experience across the district.
  • Support the development and implementation of professional learning opportunities that foster a shared vision and collective leadership across schools.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education / Experience :

Any combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these qualifications would be :

Education : A Master's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in educational administration, curriculum and instruction, special education, or a related field.

Experience : At least five years of educational leadership experience, including experience as a school principal. Experience managing within a complex organization is essential.

Licenses / Certificates : A valid Nevada teaching certificate and School Administrator License.

Knowledge of :

  • School operations, instructional leadership, and organizational management.
  • Academic standards and instructional best practices.
  • Equity-focused leadership and strategies for closing achievement gaps.
  • Federal and state laws, including Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and policies governing general and special education programs.
  • Budget management, grant administration, and program evaluation.
  • Effective management and staff supervision principles.
  • Skills at :

  • Building leadership capacity in school principals through coaching and professional development.
  • Analyzing data to drive instructional and organizational decisions.
  • Creating and maintaining strong collaborative relationships with principals, district leaders, and stakeholders.
  • Promoting high expectations and measurable goals for student achievement.
  • Navigating politically charged environments with integrity and transparency.
  • Managing and evaluating personnel effectively to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Communicating effectively with diverse stakeholders, including students, families, and community partners.
