EDUCATIONAL AUDIOLOGIST

POSITION SUMMARY :

The educational audiologist is uniquely qualified to provide comprehensive services including audiological assessments, direct / indirect services, in-service activities and consultant services for individuals 3 - 21 years and their families / caregivers. Educational audiologists facilitate support for students with hearing difficulties in the educational setting. As a skilled professional, the educational audiologist should demonstrate competency in the following areas :

DUTIES AND TASKS :

  • Identification / Prevention Programs

o Establish, administer, and / or coordinate identification programs including pure tone audiometry, DPOAEs, and immittance screening

o Collaboration with state and local Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs to facilitate an efficient transition from initial screening through diagnosis and intervention provided within the educational setting

o Train and supervise audiology support personnel or other appropriate personnel for hearing identification programs and assistive hearing device monitoring

  • Audiological Assessments
  • o Perform threshold, pure-tone air and bone conduction, measures, speech reception and word recognition testing, immittance measures, DPOAEs, and otoscopy

    o Perform comprehensive educationally and / or developmentally relevant audiological assessments using procedures that are free of cultural bias and are appropriate to the child's receptive and expressive language skills, cognitive abilities and behavioral functioning

    o Evaluate the need for and functioning of hearing aids, individual and / or group amplification systems, cochlear implants, vibrotactile devices and other hearing assistive technology (HATS)

    o Provide written and / or verbal interpretation of audiological assessment results, functional implications, and management recommendations appropriate to the intended audience such as school district personnel, parents, guardians, physicians or other professionals

  • Referrals
  • o Make appropriate referrals for services needed for the identification and management of children with hearing loss

    o When indicated, recommendations to physicians for medical diagnosis of hearing loss and community audiologists when amplification is needed

    o Maintain a collaborative working relationship with local audiologists, ENT physicians, cochlear implant programming audiologists, hearing assistive technology companies

  • Educational Management
  • o Demonstrate an understanding of general child development and management; auditory skill development; and the relationship of hearing and hearing loss to communicative, physical, psychosocial, cognitive, academic and vocational development

    o Demonstrate an understanding of the structure of the learning environment, school systems, multidisciplinary teams and community / professional resources

    o Demonstrate an understanding of legal issues and procedures, especially the legal rights (and due process for) students, parents, teachers, administrators and school boards, including the implications of the ADA, IDEA, Section of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and any additional federal, state or local initiatives and mandates

    o Demonstrate an understanding of state mandates and laws that concern the health, development and education of children

    o Demonstrate an understanding for participation in the IFSP, IEP and transition planning processes and procedures

    o Demonstrate an understanding of, and provide recommendations for , educational options for individuals with hearing loss, including appropriate intensity of services and HATS as part of the multidisciplinary team

    o Participate in team management of communication treatment for children with hearing loss

    o Provide collaborative consultation with classroom teachers, other professionals, school support personnel, administrators and / or parent / caregivers regarding the needs of a specific child with hearing loss and educational management in general

    o Case management / care coordination with family, school, medical and community services to facilitate transitions between schools, program agencies, etc

    o Maintain written records and appropriate / required documentation

    o Provide counseling for families / caregivers and students using effective interpersonal communication skills with sensitivity to family / caregivers system

  • Direct educational audiology services provide a continuum of auditory services, in the child's school that may include, but are not limited to :
  • o Communication strategies

    o Educating students about their hearing impairments

    o Self-management of hearing needs

    o Orientation to, and use and maintenance of appropriate amplification instrumentation and other HATS

    o Recommendations and accommodations in the classroom to best access educational information

    EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

  • Education :
  • o AuD (Doctor of Audiology) or Master's Degree in Audiology from an from an accredited graduate university program

    o CCC-A with ASHA and / or AAA

    o Nevada Teaching License

    o Educational audiologists must meet current state and federal requirements for credentialing through licensure and certification

    o 1 year experience with pediatric audiology and / or educational audiology

    KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Pediatric audiological testing, FM systems, classroom auditory distribution systems, and personal amplification, i.e. : hearing aids, BAHA, and cochlear implants
  • Child development, specifically speech-language and hearing and the impact of hearing loss in the educational setting
  • IEPs, , IDEA for deaf and hard of hearing students and their education
  • SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Creating an effective environment for audiological testing
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with teachers, administrators, counselors, SLPs, nurses, psychologists, and other staff members
  • Establish and maintain standard of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the audiology testing suite and classroom
  • Effective utilization of technology in instruction, planning, data-based decision making and monitoring of student achievement
  • License / Certification :

    o Possession of, or the ability to obtain a valid Nevada teaching license in the relevant subject area and / or grade level

    o Holding Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) in ASHA or holding certification with American Academy of Audiology (AAA)
