What are the responsibilities and job description for the JUVENILE PROBATION OFFICER I position at Washoe County?
Under close supervision, receives training on a wide range of casework in Juvenile Services programs in a manner consistent with the policies, procedures, and practices of the Department of Juvenile Services and in compliance with NRS Chapter 62; and performs related work as required.
This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill a current full-time vacancy at Juvenile Services. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

License Or Certificate
Successful completion of the Nevada Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) academy in the first year of employment including passing the Nevada POST Physical Readiness Test and must maintain POST requirements per NRS/NAC 289 for continued employment in this classification.
CPR/First Aid certification upon appointment at own expense and must maintain CPR/First Aid certification for continued employment.
A valid Nevada Class C driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and for continued employment in this classification.
Selected candidates must pass a background investigation which includes:
- Complete and submit a Personal History Statement and pass an extensive background investigation.
- Submit a set of fingerprints.
- Successfully complete a Computerized Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) examination.
- Submit to a psychological examination.
- Pass a thorough pre-employment medical examination in accordance with NAC 289.110, and drug screen.
A person may not be appointed to perform the duties of a peace officer if he or she has:
- Been convicted of a felony in this State or of any offense which would be a felony if committed in this State.
- Been convicted of an offense involving moral turpitude or the unlawful use, sale or possession of a controlled substance; or as listed in NRS 62B.270.
- A documented history of physical violence.
- Resigned in lieu of termination or been terminated from any civil services employment for substantiated misconduct involving dishonesty as described in NAC 289.110.
Successful completion of Defensive Tactics annually for continued employment in this classification.
Successful completion of Department approved and mandated training for continued employment.
Will work on-call rotation including weekends, holidays and evenings and maintain a flexible work schedule.
Must submit to a TB test upon appointment at own expense.
Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.

2. Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will receive an email invitation to take the PPRT (POST Physical Readiness Test), which is a pass/fail test, is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, 2025. Please note you must be present in Reno, NV to take the PPRT.

- 300 meter sprint – 82 seconds
- Agility run – 23.4 seconds

3. Applicants who pass the PPRT will receive an email invitation to take the Professional Level online exam administered remotely.
This exam link will tentatively be delivered via email the week of June 23, 2025, and qualified candidates will have a time limit to complete the exam, within 4 calendar days. **You will be notified if you are eligible to transfer an exam score within 1 week following the PPRT.
The exam will evaluate your expertise, knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:
- Reading Comprehension
- Written Communication
- Analytical Ability
- Business Math
- Interpersonal and Customer Service Skills
Pursuant to the Washoe County Personnel Handbook, the Department of Human Resources does not administer an exam when there are less than 20 qualified candidates. Once the recruitment has closed, if there are less than 20 qualified candidates, the exam will be waived and all qualifying candidates will be placed on an unranked eligible list which will be referred to the hiring department. If the exam is scheduled to move forward and less than 20 candidates take the exam as determined by the Department of Human Resources, the exam will be waived. Only those candidates who took the exam or have a transfer score will be placed on an unranked eligible list which will be referred to the hiring department. Note: This only applies to the unproctored online exam. All qualified applicants must complete the PPRT.
4. After both the online exam and the PPRT are completed with passing scores, you will receive an additional email notifying you of your score and rank. This rank will be used to determine which candidates will be interviewed by departments trying to fill a vacancy. If you do not pass the online examination you will be notified via email.
5. Hiring departments schedule interviews from a list of top scoring candidates. If your name is not sent to the hiring department, it will remain on the list for future opportunities as they become available.
Top candidates from the interview process will go through a background investigation and the top candidate will start the Law Enforcement Academy in January 2026.
