What are the responsibilities and job description for the LIEUTENANT - SHERIFF'S OFFICE (DEPARTMENT PROMOTIONAL ONLY) position at Washoe County?
Under direction, manages the daily operation of a subdivision or program in the Sheriff's Office, which includes implementing, monitoring and evaluating goals, objectives, procedures, standards, staff utilization and costs; and performs related work as assigned.
This is a DEPARTMENT PROMOTIONAL only recruitment being conducted to create a list for future vacancies. Only those applicants currently working in the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) in the classified service for at least six months are eligible to apply. Unclassified Appointees are not eligible for this promotional exam.
Note: the current list for Lieutenant will remain in effect until a new list is established from this recruitment. The appointing authority has the right to select any eligible candidate from the qualifying list based on the Merit principles and processes and the operational needs of the agency.

Seven years of full-time paid public law enforcement experience, including one year as a Sergeant with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
License Or Certificate
- A valid driver's license is required at the time of application and for continued employment in this classification.
- Possession of a Nevada Advanced P.O.S.T. Certificate is required at the time of application.
- Required to maintain Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate as Category I Police Officer per NRS/NAC 289.
- Required to complete P.O.S.T continuing education requirements in accordance with NRS/NAC 289.
- Required to be Patrol Certified as defined in Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Policies and Procedures at the time of application for assignments in Operations.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Supervisory Deputies Association (WCSSDA) covers the Lieutenant position.
Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.
Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.

2. If you have met the minimum requirements, you will receive an additional email inviting you to attend the Lieutenant Assessment Center.
The tentative date for the Assessment Center is the week of April 21, 2025.
The Assessment Center will consist of a variety of assessment exercises designed to allow candidates the opportunity to demonstrate, under standardized conditions, the entry level knowledge, skills and abilities most essential for success as a Lieutenant with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
3. After the exam is completed, you will receive an additional email notifying you of the results. If you pass the examination, you will receive your score and rank.
