Under direct supervision the WUMA Technician I is responsible for performing the day-to-day operations and maintenance tasks necessary for the reliable and efficient operation of the Utility’s water delivery and wastewater disposal system. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and one-year experience in the operation and/or maintenance of equipment similar to water/wastewater equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Certification as a water and/or wastewater treatment operator must be obtained within one year of appointment.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.

  • Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

  • Preference will be given to Qualified Native American Indians.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs daily inspection and preventative maintenance of water/wastewater collection, treatment, pumping, storage and distribution facilities.

  • Provides detailed record keeping involving metering devices.

  • Operates pipeline repair equipment such as backhoe/loader, compressors, sewer line cleaning units, etc.

  • Handles chlorine and fluoride solutions and chlorinators, softeners, saturators, fluoridations, chemicals and cleaning filters.

  • Assists WUMA Tech II as an apprentice and learn to operate Tribal Water production, treatment, and distribution systems in such a manner as to maintain compliance with Tribal and Federal regulations and in accordance with Tribal policies.

  • Learns, operates, and maintains the SCADA telemetry and other control systems involved in regulating pumps, booster stations, tank levels, valves, and treatment plant operations.

  • Assists in creating reports and maintaining records as required by the Tribe and other applicable regulatory agencies involved in water operations.

  • Cleans and maintains all Tribal water facilities and surrounding grounds and landscaping.

  • Utilizes proper safety precautions relating to all work performed by WUMA staff.

  • Performs tests as required and make necessary adjustments to maintain water supply, volume, and pressure within limits set by regulation, permit or Tribal Policy.

  • Performs routine accurate readings of Tribal residential and commercial water meters using equipment as prescribed and in coordination with the Tribal GAAP.

  • Monitors and evaluates individual water meters for accuracy of operation and to repair or replace them as needed.

  • Interprets maps, blueprints and drawings of the Tribal water system as necessary for Tribal needs, but also in relation to the accurate location of underground water facilities in response to USA DIGS or encroachment permit requests or for preparation for Tribal repair on construction projects.

  • Performs minor electrical, welding, carpentry, painting, and vehicle repairs.

  • Renders manual labor to repair main breaks and other shovel work required to accomplish task(s).

  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Knowledge of traditional form of government and tribal customs and traditions.

  • Knowledge of the functions and structure of Washoe Tribe.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of waterworks and sewer systems.

  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and practices.

  • Knowledge of electrical and plumbing practices and techniques.

  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to operate heavy machinery.

  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; climb or balance; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee occasionally is required to sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

Work Environment
  • Work is regularly performed both indoors in an office setting with a moderate noise level and outdoors where exposure to natural weather conditions and various dusts and mists may occur. Prolonged standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground. Situations where safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, protective face shields, or hardhats are needed may occur. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Travel may be required for training, meetings, conferences, presentations, and other events.

Hiring preference is provided to members of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California followed by members of other federally recognized tribes. Must pass and comply with the PL101.630-Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Protection Act. Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California requires any designated candidate to complete a pre-employment drug/alcohol screening, must possess a valid NV or CA. driver license within thirty (30) days of employment, (when applicable) and PL 101-630 Criminal / Character Investigation background check.
