Position Summary:
The Police Recruit is a sponsored position in the Police Academy. The successful candidate must pass all requirements of the police academy they are enrolled in as required by M.C.O.L.E.S. (Michigan Coalition on Law Enforcement Standards). Should the Police Recruit not successfully pass all requirements of the police academy, their employment with WCC shall be terminated. Upon successful completion of the police academy, the police recruit shall be promoted to the rank of C.R.O. (Campus Resource Officer). The successful candidate must sign an agreement to reimburse the college for all costs of the police academy training based on a graduated scale.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Attend all Police Academy training.
- Meet and/or exceed all Police Academy training standards as required by M.C.O.L.E.S. for certification as a law enforcement officer in the State of Michigan
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief, Deputy Chief, Sergeant, Supervisors and or Police officers of the Public Safety department, while serving in the capacity of a Police Recruit.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- On Campus.
- Required to work in all weather conditions as dictated by Police Academy personnel.
- Required to wear a uniform.
- Ability to lift, pull, and use pushing motions in excess of 100 pounds; traverse stairs rapidly; work in confined spaces, at heights, and below ground; lift and position injured persons and render emergency aid.
- Ability to execute defensive maneuvers to protect self and others.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- High School graduate or GED equivalent.
- Possess a valid Driver’s License with a safe driving record.
- Must be able to meet all physical demands listed and work in the environment described.
- Strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and public safety agencies.
- Must be able to work in a public safety/police department environment which requires compliance with state and federal laws that govern police department operations; including laws regarding privacy, confidentiality, and access to law enforcement databases.
- Must have high ethical and moral character and pass an extensive background investigation.

Police Recruit – Sponsored Academy Opportunity
Washtenaw Community College (WCC) is seeking dedicated individuals to join our Public Safety team as Police Recruits. Selected candidates will receive fully sponsored training at an MCOLES-approved law enforcement academy, including covered tuition, uniforms, equipment, and other required expenses.
In return for this sponsorship, recruits must commit to employment with the WCC Department of Public Safety (WCC DPS) for a minimum of four (4) years upon academy completion. If a recruit voluntarily leaves before fulfilling the required service period, they may be responsible for reimbursing a portion or all of the academy costs, as outlined in the WCC Police Academy Reimbursement Agreement (in accordance with Michigan Public Act 43 of 2023).
