Washtenaw Community College (WCC) is seeking a part-time ESL Instructor in our Adult Transitions Pathways Program. We are looking for a candidate who holds a valid Michigan teaching certificate to provide instruction to our adult English language learners that ensures students gain the English skills necessary to advance to the next level. The ESL Instructor plays a crucial role in facilitating learning experiences for adult learners. This position involves developing and delivering engaging lesson plans, assessing student progress, maintaining accurate records, and fostering a positive learning environment. The ideal candidate will have a passion for education, strong communication skills, and the ability to adapt to diverse student backgrounds.
The Adult Transitions Pathways Program is a non-credit adult education program that offers ESL classes in-person at the Ypsilanti Township Community Center. We are currently hiring an in-person evening instructor.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

- Provide classroom instruction in English to adult language learners.
- Ensure that instruction aligns with the overall program goals and state/federal guidelines, promoting student success.
- Utilize various curriculum resources effectively to develop comprehensive lesson plans that incorporate differentiated techniques and strategies to enhance English communication skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
- Adapt curricula to reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of students.
- Integrate adult education competencies, goals, and objectives into lesson plans.
- Design projects that enhance lectures and engage students.
- Administer academic and language assessments to evaluate student progress in English language acquisition.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and evidence of growth.
- Maintain a digital attendance log.
- Create a nurturing, supportive, and motivating classroom atmosphere with high expectations for student responsibility.
- Clearly communicate classroom routines and incorporate challenging instructional strategies.
- Establish and communicate clear learning objectives for all activities.
- Develop strategies to keep participants engaged in the program.
- Grade student work and provide constructive feedback to enhance learning.
- Work with program administration to ensure initiatives are being met.
- Stay informed about current topics in adult education and build relationships with community agencies and programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment: In-person at the Ypsilanti Township Community Center.
Hours/Schedule: 15-18 week classes, 8 hours a week (Tuesday-Thursday 5:20-8pm).
Schedules vary according to class schedules. Part time Instructors may teach up to (8) eight contact hours per week or 120 contact hours per semester. The terms of employment are based on college enrollment and class enrollment

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field.
- Must hold a Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
- At least three (3) years classroom teaching experience.
- Proficiency in curriculum development and assessment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and cultural competence.
- Willingness to work collaboratively in a team-focused environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in TESOL, Education, Reading, or a related field.
- Successful teaching experience with Multilingual adult learners.
- Experience in teaching at-risk and multi-cultural adult or high-school populations.
- Familiarity with literacy programs and adult learner needs.
- Commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth.
