Key Responsibilities:
- Operate front-end trucks to collect solid waste and recyclables from multi-family residential and commercial routes, fulfilling customer contracts.
- Drive commercial frontload or ancillary equipment along designated routes, collecting waste and transporting it to post-collection facilities.
- Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections, complete vehicle condition reports, and submit them at the end of each shift.
- Courteously interact with customers and/or the general public to answer questions or respond to requests, notifying supervisors of issues requiring management action.
- Maintain clean customer sites and safety along roads and highways by cleaning loose trash from trucks and surrounding areas during the dumping process.
- Submit required logs, route/productivity sheets, and vehicle condition reports according to law or company policy.
- Maneuver trucks into and out of tight spaces using mirrors for backing up.
- Use key maps and GPS to locate service addresses.
- FOLLOW SAFE OPERATING PRACTICES, INCLUDING LOCK OUT/ TAG OUT PROCEDURES TO ENSURE PROPER OPERATION OF THE TRUCK.
- Monitor operations to detect loose debris, using mirrors or direct sight and/or listening for debris falling onto the truck during dumping operations; visually scan customer sites before and after dumping.
- Follow all safety standards, equipment checks, and precautions when performing duties. Comply with federal, state/provincial, local, and company rules on safety and vehicle operation.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Have at least one year of commercial truck driving experience OR possess a CDL school certificate.
- Meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to Company standards.
- Demonstrate the ability to safely drive the truck and operate the equipment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Know the truck and its components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
- Control the operations of equipment; maneuver trucks into and out of tight spaces using mirrors for backing up distances of approximately 120 feet or more.
- Recognize unacceptable waste, such as gasoline or other flammable materials.
- Communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
- Read, write, and comprehend associated documents and maps.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Be flexible to accept and adapt to change, as well as committed to seeking continuous improvement.
- Exert muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds repetitively using proper lifting techniques.
- Coordinate two or more limbs while sitting or standing.
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
Physical/Mental Demands:
- Stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell regularly.
- Visual Requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus due to constant maneuvering in tight and high-traffic areas.
- Lift/move up to 25 pounds regularly, 50 pounds frequently, and 100 pounds occasionally. Occasionally move/push up to 300 pounds.
- Enter and exit the truck multiple times during a shift to open doors to corrals.
- Climb to the top of the truck to verify load security before transporting it to the landfill.
- Sit for 75% of the time due to primary driving function.
- Work in usually loud conditions.
Working Conditions:
- Exposed to loud noise, humidity, rainy/stormy weather, extreme hot and cold temperatures, moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles frequently.
- Work in outdoor environments up to 100% of the time.
- Route away from branch location on a continuous basis throughout the day.
- Occasionally work in high-precarious places.
- Constantly work in motor vehicle traffic conditions.
- Usually work in a loud environment.
